Catholic School Announcement Expected, Could Be 'Devastating'

An news conference is scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m.

On Friday, the Blue Ribbon Commission, charged with planning the future of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, will release its recommendations.

Catholic schools in the Phoenixville area include Holy Family Elementary in Phoenixville, St. Basil the Great Elementary in Kimberton and Pope John Paul II High School in Limerick.

Pope John Paul II High School will dismiss at 1 p.m. on Friday for the announcement of the Blue Ribbon Commission's findings.

Local news station FOX29 spoke with blogger Susan Matthews, who covers the Archdiocese on PhillyCatholicPost.com. Matthews said rumors indicate the announcement has the potential to be "devastating" to those in the Catholic education system in the Philadelphia area.

"Matthews believes between 30 and 40 elementary schools will close and about four to five high schools will close, based on rumors that everyone is hearing who covers the Archdiocese," FOX29 reports.

According to a press release from the Archdiocese, Friday's news conference will be streamed live on the Archdiocesan website at www.archphila.org.

"At the start of the news conference a new website www.faithinthefuture.com will go live," the release states. "This site will have the Blue Ribbon Commission report and updates from the Office of Catholic Education."
