Erratic Driving Leads to DUI Arrest for Borough Man

A wide turn took him into a police officer's lane.

A Phoenixville man was arrested for DUI earlier this month after a wide right turn off of High Street took him into an officer’s lane, police are reporting.

Evaristo Mejia-Itzep, 32, was charged with four counts of DUI, careless driving, and disregarding traffic lane after the October 7 incident.

According to court documents, a Phoenixville Police officer pulled Mejia-Itzep over on Black Rock Road and Riverwalk Drive after he made a wide right turn and had trouble staying in his lane.

In the affidavit of probable cause, the arresting officer indicated that there was a language barrier between him and Mejia-Itzep. The officer wrote that Mejia-Itzep was unable to provide his drivers license, vehicle registration, or insurance information, and demonstrated signs of intoxication.

Because the aforementioned language barrier made field sobriety testing impossible, the officer gave Mejia-Itzep a breathalyzer test, which showed the presence of alcohol.

Mejia-Itzep was arrested for DUI and taken to Phoenixville Hospital to have blood drawn for testing. He faces preliminary hearing on November 15.
