Genuardi's on Kimberton Road to Close

Signs say the grocery store will shut its doors on Oct. 15.

Signs confirm the rumors.

It appears the store on Kimberton Road will close on Oct. 15. Signs stated that all goods are 30 percent off in the grocery store, which helps anchor the Maple Lawn Village Shopping Center.

According to The New York Times, Safeway agreed to purchase the formerly family-owned Genuardi's chain in 2000 to strengthen its east coast presence. Safeway is based in California.

Trade publication Supermarket News reported that the Eagleville store will close this week, and noted that following that, the chain will consist of 28 stores. The publication reported that a source close to a potential deal said it's possible that Ahold's Giant-Carlisle chain may snap up some or all of the Genuardi's locations. In 2010, Giant-Carlisle bought two former Genuardi's locations.

One source told SN last week that while it is likely Giant would buy some Genuardi’s stores, others would likely go unsold as a result of having continuous operating clauses in their leases, poor locations or sites in overstored markets.

The source confirmed reports surfacing last month that Safeway was exploring a sale of Genuardi’s, and talking to various wholesalers and retailers.

The closing of the Phoenixville Genuardi's location is accompanied by the Rite Aid next door also moving. On Tuesday night, a large "We're Moving" sign greeted customers at the Maple Lawn . The sign explained that after Oct. 7, customers should pick up prescriptions at Rite Aid's other location at 200 Kimberton Road.

Patch is working to get more information on the store closing.
