Another Close One: Kampf Tops Drucker in 157th Rematch

The Republican won a second term while Drucker admitted this was his last run in the district.

For the second-consecutive election cycle, Republican Warren Kampf topped Democrat Paul Drucker for right to represent the 157th District in Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives.

The incumbent declared victory shortly before 11 p.m. Two years after beating Drucker by just under a thousand votes, Kampf ultimately won by 1,002.

At an election night party at Wayne’s Landmark Americana, Kampf said his message of fiscal restraint struck a chord with the voters of the 157th.

“Controlling spending in state government and not increasing the burden on the job sector, improving Pennsylvania’s competitiveness, making it more job-friendly, was all a large part of our message. Wages aren’t going up,” Kampf said, in the midst of a Republican celebration that was muted by the news that President Barack Obama had just won reelection to his own second term.

Kampf added that his November 6 success was driven by a simple two-pronged strategy: good governance and passionate campaigning.

“We’ve worked very hard the last two years as a state representative office. We provided very good constituent services. On top of that, I knocked on something like 9,000 doors, talked to a lot of people, and many of those people liked the fact that I was out in their communities asking them what they thought was important in state government,” he added.

“I’m thrilled with the win and I’m looking forward to get back to Harrisburg to do the people’s business.”

Paul Drucker held an even more subdued election night party at McKenzie Brew House in Berwyn. Tuesday’s was an outcome, he admitted, that he didn’t see coming.

“We always felt good about it. Always,” he sighed.

Drucker added that, after consecutive losses, this would be his last run for the 157th District seat.

“I’m not Richard Nixon,” he joked.

Patch get your numbers right - it was by over 1,000 votes. The 157th includes Montgomery County as well. Paul Drucker got trounced - and he deserved it. He lied about his support for tolling on 422, then had the nerve to accuse Rep Kampf of lying about it! Dear Paul Drucker: please go away now.

Final count per the PA Department of State website, Kampf 15,713, Drucker 14,711. A margin of 1,002 votes for the math challenged. Patch should be embarrassed and post a correction.

Had Paul Drucker stepped aside and allowed someone else to run there would be a Democrat going to Harrisburg from this seat and at least one other.

Drucker was never going to get the votes from Montgomery County, He would have destroyed the communities lining 422 had he gotten back to Harrisburg.

You are absolutely correct. The nomination and support of Paul Drucker was a display of astonishing incompetence by the Tredyffrin Democrats, Chester County Democrats, and the HDCC. They thought they could lie their way out of Drucker's 422 mess, but they were wrong. They also failed to estimate the amount of animosity toward Drucker by the people of the 157th. His former staff abandoned him - what more do you need to know? An epic fail by Democrats, and now that seat, so hard-fought in 2008, is lost for years.

I agree. The moronic plot to toll 422 cost him. Luckily Democrats still won most of the races that really matter and Drucker will now crawl back under the rock he came from.

I wish Chester County would toll the the Valley Creek bridge, the Monte Clare bridge and the Rte. 113 bridge all connecting Montgomery County. Keep Montco aggressive drivers out of Phoenixville for good and you can keep Rte. 422 toll free.

Wow, that is brilliant. So "aggressive" drivers only come from Montgomery County? Not to mention that trying to "keep people out" of Phoenixville would kill the entire town. Do you really think all those bars and restaurants are ful of only Phoenixville residents?

James, there is an old saying: Better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you are a fool rather then open it and remove all doubt.

Errr, no. I've had my fair share of tailgaters on 29 to know there's plenty of d-bags in Chester County as well. Usually they are driving a BMW or Mercedes. Maybe we just need to institute an a-hole tax on all luxury cars.

Right, and the self-appointed experts continue pushing their garbage even in victory. Trounced? 1,002 vote margin out of a total of 30,424? Hardly. Take a nap. Get a grip. The 422 tolling lies could more than account for that difference. If it were true, why did the signs not come out until the last minute? Just like last time, last minute, scare the public, sway the uncommitted & ignorant at the last minute. Standard Republican tactic. Standard.

The BIGGEST joke in this whole mess is 422, but now that's Kampf's problem, and I'm sure he's got new, visionary direction to fix that piece of garbage. We're waiting. . .

Doug - You are the biggest joke. Apparently you can't listen and read, because Paul Drucker said repeatedly he wanted to toll 422. It is documented in video and in news stories where he was directly quoted. Talk about ignorant...do your research and stop sounding like such an idiot.

I am a Democrat who would have been directly affected by Drucker's debacle.

422 cost the Dems a number of seats.

You may want to look at how both the 6th and 7th Congressional Districts have been gerrymandered to take advantage of this for the GOP.

Drucker killed stuff out here for years...

Doug,
I always think it is funny when someone with only a posting handle asks me to prove who I am when I put my full real name into a post...

The TT republicans needed something to feel good about after getting their collective asses kicked. It was sickening the amount of Romney yard signs I saw around here. I am a registered Independent and I could not see how anyone could vote for one of the worst presidential candidates to run in a while. He was right up there with Kerry.

Hopefully this shows the need for the GOP to move towards the center socially or otherwise run the risk of dieing out with the change in voting demographics

Because Drucker is a clown who wanted to toll 422. Same with that moron Mike Hays in Spring City. If we had some one better running for this seat, "My" Krampf would be out on his a$$ today. Oh well, live and learn.

Elizabeth - Did you see the Drucker mail? Follow his horribly run campaign? Read his lies about 422 tolling? If so, I'm not sure why you are confused. You still need to run a good campaign to win - Obama coattails are not enough.

I wonder if 422 was really Drucker's problem. Obama, Casey, Kane and Dinniman all won a majority in Tredyffrin, but Drucker only managed 46% - over 1000 votes behind Kampf. Do Tredyffrin residents care that much about 422?

This tabulation assumes the info on the county web site is correct - which I question since the W2 precinct is shown with a turnout of only 36% - unlike all other Tredyffrin precincts which were in the 75-80% range. 1000 missing votes ........

Also notable here, is that with a high turn out Tredyffrin will vote for the Ds, but low turnout local off year races leave us ruled by the effective TTRC machine.

Ray -- The reporting error for W2 was fixed this morning (http://webapps.chesco.org/election/lib/election/results/635f.htm -- if you get the old results, hit the refresh button on your browser). We had two ballot scanners, but Voter Services only posted the results from one of the two on election night. The actual turnout for W2 was 77%.

Many thanks, Steve, for the explanation. I had just seen the web site update. For what it's worth, the overall totals for the 157th have also changed (by more than the W2 fix): Kampf 17,136, Drucker 16,379, margin 757.

I think people forget that the 157th had about half of Lower Providence and West Norriton attached to it.

Drucker's Tolling Plan was devastating to to the 422 corridor that would have had at least 2 of his tolling booths.

Lower Providence has a business center that had a hard enough time getting populated as it is. What do you think the toll would have done.

Remember this was a fully formed plan Drucker was pushing.

I am a Democrat and I believe Drucker cost the Montgomery County Democrats a chance to sweep last year's County elections.

If the TE Democrats had a lick of sense they would have nominated someone like John McGuigan who has legislative experience as a former Norristown Council Member and Chairman before moving into the 157th.

At the end of the day, Drucker had a term in office and Kampf had a term in office. Drucker won in a landslide Obama victory and lost in one too. 422, no doubt, was an issue in Montgomery County and maybe Phoenixville, but probably much less in Tredyffrin (where, to note, Drucker had never won in any of the three races.) Was it the defining issue when you have a sluggish economy, no state money, etc? Probably not.

It seems like while close, people simply backed Kampf as more effective than Drucker had been. This was a race that was unique in that we could actually "compare the records" and did - and Kampf apparently came out on top in that comparison. Also give Kampf his due: he works hard as a legislator and worked hard as a candidate.

A 1,000 vote victory is a hard-fought victory and Kampf earned it. A 1,000 vote loss also shows Drucker worked hard too. It was a tough race but it is over - let's move on.

Someone needs to tell Kampf that a photo of him with his wife and kids on a campaign ad is not an argument against his abysmal record on women's health and family planning. In fact, when he came to our door to beg for our vote, he stated unequivocally that he did not support his party's stance on abortion rights and family planning. Kampf, read your own record before opening your mouth next time.
