No Pants Subway Ride: Are You In?
Philadelphia is one of dozens of cities around the country taking part in an annual pantless tradition.
Global No Pants Subway Ride is this Sunday.
This will be the 12th year for the event organized by Improv Everywhere.
The No Pants Subway Ride started in New York, but has branched out to other cities. (Check out the Improv Everywhere YouTube video of last year’s New York event in the upper right corner of this post.)
People of all ages and underwear choices take part in the event, as shown in the video.
Philadelphia’s No Pants Subway Ride has its own Facebook page, which gives details on what to do if you want to be part of the event, which runs from 3-5 p.m.
It also advises participants, “Please wear underwear. This isn't the naked bike ride.”

lighten up! No one is asking you to participate. You see this much at the beach, even more. It is just people having fun with doing something that is incongruous with the daily norm. No one is harmed in the making of this event.

Okay, this is later in the day, but is still negatory. Actually, if I need to ride the sub to go to work or to go to worship, I do NOT have a choice in the matter as with choosing to go to or not to go to the beach. SEPTA is a public accommodation. What you want to label as "fun" for yourself, may be serious temptation to another. You might be quick to judge someone who gives into the temptation as a pervert. You may well hurt someone directly or indirectly. At minimum, your fun is an invasive offense to many.

The riders are not actually naked, btw. They generally choose rather modest underwear since it will be seen. Some shorts cover less but maybe you worry about those folks too - how should I know? There should be no reason to worry about getting a yeast infection from this event. Also, the flu concern is not related to pants. By now we all know viruses cause the flu, not exposure to cold.

Also usually the cold is not a problem. If you read the facebook page the idea is to remove the pants after boarding and put them on again before leaving. It might be good practice for other unexpected events that one might witness. As for the point, you'll have to ask someone who has participated. I'm sure there are all sorts of reasond people participate. Heck, some are probably posted on the facebook page.
