Red Cross Shelters Hundreds as Sandy Hits

Hundreds of people, dozens of pet seek shelter from the storm.

 

The American Red Cross worked with local and county governments to set up 14 shelters in the suburbs and the city of Philadelphia. All together the Red Cross reports 619 people and 53 pets were sheltered from the storm in five Southeastern Pennsylvania locations.

East Lansdowne Elementary       14 people

Ridley Middle School                     17 people

PHILADELPHIA

West Philly High School             243 people, 8 pets

Roxborough High School               55 people, 6 pets

Samuel Fels High School                81 people, 15 pets

 

CHESTER COUNTY

Avon Grove High School                58 people

Lionville Middle School                  16 people 7 pets

 

MONTGOMERY COUNTY

Pottstown High School                  25 people, 3 pets

Cheltenham High School               10 people

Norristown High School                 30 people

 

BUCKS COUNTY

Palisades High School                     6 people, 5 pets

Pennsbury East High School         52 people, 9 pets

Council Rock North HS                  2 people

There are also pets at the Montgomery County Shelters in Norristown and Cheltenham. Norristown had 6 pets over night - 4 dogs and 2 ferrets, Cheltenham had 4 dogs overnight. The Pet shelters are run by Montgomery County Animal Response Team (MCART).
