Shot Fired in Mainstay Inn, Police Say

According to Phoenixville PD, a man thought someone was threatening him outside his room, so he fired a .22-caliber gunshot through the door.

A 28-year-old Barto, Pennsylvania man was arrested this month after Phoenixville Police say he fired a rifle round through the wall of his room in the Mainstay Inn.

According to court documents, on January 30 at 9:52 a.m., officers responded to the hotel for a report of a “suspicious condition.”

They were led to room 204, where a hotel employee showed them what looked to be a bullet hole in the center of the door. It appeared the gunshot had been fired inside the room, blasted through the door, then lodged itself in the wall across from the room. Inside the room police found one spent .22-caliber cartridge case and two unspent .22-caliber cases.

Staff identified the man who rented room 204 the night before as Joshua Stewart, 28.

While Phoenixville Police were sorting out the location of Stewart, they received a call from the Douglas Township Police Department. Douglasville PD told Phoenixville that they were currently in contact with Stewart, who told them that he had stayed in the Mainstay the previous night and thought someone was outside his room threatening him, so he fired one shot from a .22-caliber rifle through the door. Douglasville PD said Stewart was acting irrational, and they were preparing paperwork to have him involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital.

On February 1, Stewart was arrested and charged with recklessly endangering another person, criminal mischief, and disorderly conduct. He was placed in Chester County Prison on $75,00 bail and faces preliminary hearing on February 14.

The DeMutis family is profiting from their notable efforts to improve this town but they keep open this run-down magnet for crime and sleaze.

HAHA, Good One! IF they closed this place, they would still have to close every other apartment they own harboring "high class" citizens to make an impact on crime

Bill N, it's funny that you say that the hotel is a magnet for crime and sleeze, have you seen how many people this hotel brings to Phoenixville? You will find something in ANY hotel, it's not the staffs fault they cant tell what someone will be doing in room. Not everyone looks sleezy.

As for the DeMutis's, this town prob wouldn’t be where it is today. They have brought in many good tenants, restaurant’s, district court building,101 Bridge Street, Condo's renovated a lot of their properties etc. on their own dime. This town has changed dramatically in the past 10 years.

Maybe if there where more people who where invested in this town as they are, maybe you wouldn’t be complaining about them! How about those who like to complain about the town, you should invest some time and money to improve it instead of blasting Phoenixville, if you don’t like it, then move.

J lifetime resident, I agree with you. They have and are making a huge positive impact on this town.

It's funny that you use the term 'blasting Phoenixville' because that what one of the DeMutis' guests did to Molly Maguire's toilet a while back! I love this town but I hate the Mainstay! Also, many of the former businesses in town would still be here if Manny & family didn't charge so much for rent.
