Video: Candlelight Vigil Held for 4-year-old Trey Love

A crowd gathered in Reeves Park Sunday to support Phoenixville's Trey Love and his family.

Sitting at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Sunday, a group heard from many people asking how to help 4-year-old Trey Love.

Trey was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer at age 21 months. On Sunday, he underwent surgery at CHOP. Jill McMahon-Ford, Katie Jeffers-Bala and Shirleen Smiley brainstormed an idea.

They planned a vigil in Reeves Park Sunday night. With only a few hours of planning—and lots of help from Facebook—the vigil attracted a large crowd.

“This community loves Trey,” said Jeffers-Bala.

In addition to the crowd gathered, McMahon-Ford said they had close to 200 posts on the Facebook event from people saying while they couldn't attend, they’d light candles at home or keep Trey in their thoughts.

At the vigil, Roman Cupecky, senior pastor at Hope Community Church, where Trey’s parents, Mike and Missy Love, are members of the congregation, spoke to the crowd.

“We all know that Trey is a fighter,” Cupecky told attendees.

Throughout the vigil, the crowd sang songs, lit candles and said prayers. Trey and his parents watched from CHOP thanks to video technology. Both parents said a few words and thanked the crowd for their support.

A large card was prepared and signed by those in attendance, and after the songs ended, people could speak with the family through a laptop computer.
