Graffiti “BEDE” Around Phoenixville

If you have been out walking around Phoenixville you have probably seen it. The graffiti “tag” BEDE has been seen all around Phoenixville.

Who or what is BEDE? The Urban Dictionary defines it as “a dog that exceeds the normal level of cuteness. Wikipedia defines it as “Bede, also referred to as Saint Bede or the Venerable Bede, was a monk at the Northumbrian monastery of Saint Peter at Monkwearmouth, today part of Sunderland, England, and of its companion monastery, Saint Paul's, in modern Jarrow (see Wearmouth-Jarrow), both in the Kingdom of Northumbria. Bede's monastery had access to a superb library which included works by Eusebius and Orosius among many others.

"He is well known as an author and scholar, and his most famous work, Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum (The Ecclesiastical History of the English People) gained him the title "The Father of English History". In 1899, Bede was made a Doctor of the Church by Leo XIII, a position of theological significance; he is the only native of Great Britain to achieve this designation (Anselm of Canterbury, also a Doctor of the Church, was originally from Italy). Bede was moreover a skilled linguist and translator, and his work with the Latin and Greek writings of the early Church Fathers contributed significantly to English Christianity, making the writings much more accessible to his fellow Anglo-Saxons.”

No matter what it means, or who is doing it the Town Watch of Phoenixville wants it to stop. Someone is defiling our town. It’s on downtown business windows, abandon building, public mail boxes, and even on church properties.

Only by uniting together can we stop this senseless act of vandalism. The Town Watch is trying to gather photos and information to give to the Phoenixville Police Force. If you see anyone committing this crime or have any information please contact us at pvillewatchband@gmail.com. Please send us photos and locations as well. You can also find us on Facebook at facebook.com/pvilletownwatch.

I remember reading the five volumes of his work "Ecclesiastical History of the English People.". Considered the best summary of that period of history, the finest historical work of the early Middle Ages.

And…as he once said:

"For if history records good things of good men, the thoughtful hearer is encouraged to imitate what is good; or if it records evil of wicked men, the good, religious reader or listener is encouraged to avoid all that is sinful and perverse, and to follow what he knows to be good and pleasing to God."

It is only right to single out the bede for special attention…with a resume like that he cannot be ignored.

I seriously doubt the people who are going around tagging the town with grafiti are all that knowledgeable of Ecclesiastical History. They are petty thugs who have nothing else better to do than run around spraypainting stuff all over the town and have people having conversations about what it could possibly mean.

I am not sure I want to bet on it. It could be bedeviled but I think instead it has a deeper meaning.
