Tips on How to Protect Your Data and Home Network

When talking about one’s data security and privacy, being connected to the Internet makes us very vulnerable. Hacking comes in many different forms, from malicious programs (like viruses and malwares) to network security intrusions. The convenience of having to connect wirelessly, more so on a public network, makes the risk even greater. Hackers and intruders are like vultures flying around the Web, waiting for that fallen prey to take its last breath before they swoop down and feast on its flesh. As cliché as it may sound, it is very important to secure not just your home network, but your computer(s) as well. Here are some of the most effective ways of securing your computer and network:

  1. Make use of WPA2 Encryption for Wireless Security and Create Strong Passwords – WPA2 is an AES-based encryption and leaps advanced compared to WEP and WPA. Advanced Encryption Standard or AES uses symmetric-key algorithm, which is also being utilized by the NSA to encrypt non-classified federal data.
  2. Hide Your SSID or Network Name – This is a double-security measure as the intruder will have to determine first your unknown network name before even breaking your wireless key.
  3. Disable WPS – Most of the wireless routers today support Wi-Fi Protected Setup or WPS for the convenience of setting up a wireless network. However, it has been known that a WPS pin code can be easily cracked by an experienced hacker.
  4. Change the Default Password of the Router – It says it all. A basic essential part of configuring and securing your router.
  5. Get a Strong Anti-virus Software – The risk of getting infected today is at 1 out of 10 users every day. The most recommended programs are Norton’s Antivirus and McAfee. It is a must to schedule a computer scan at least once a week.
  6. Make Sure that the Firewall is Always On – This includes the built-in software like the Windows Firewall. There is also third-party firewall software that you can install. Basically, a firewall regulates the incoming and outgoing traffic in your computer and prevents unauthorized access.
  7. Avoid Connecting to a Public Wi-Fi – Computers connected to a public Wi-Fi are the most susceptible to hacking. As much as possible, limit your connection within your home network or your provider’s 3G/4G/LTE data services.

Above all, be cautious at all times and don’t get too complacent. Change your passwords/keys more often and maintain confidentiality. You need to be vigilant with phishing schemes and sites, and use only websites that you are familiar with. Remember that nowadays, your computer and the data it contains are the extensions of your personal life. So guard it with the right tools and knowledge to avoid getting compromised and being too vulnerable.
