Poll Finds Pennsylvanians Support Medical Marijuana

A recent poll of Pennsylvanians found that an overwhelming majority support the legalization of medical marijuana.

The poll by Quinnipiac University found that 84 percent of state residents are support the legalization of medical marijuana, while only 14 percent are opposed to the idea.

When it comes to the legalization of recreational marijuana, the state is split, the poll found. Forty-eight percent would support legalization, while 49 percent were opposed.

Quinnipiac found that only 44 percent of the state’s voters admitted to having used marijuana. Only 49 percent of those ages 18 to 29 said they had tried the drug.

The poll also found that 49 percent of Pennsylvanians think marijuana is equally as dangerous as alcohol. Thirty-three percent said it is less dangerous, and 15 percent think it is more dangerous.

"Pennsylvanians think overwhelmingly that marijuana is equal to or less dangerous than alcohol, and join the American trend toward tolerance for both medical and recreational use," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. 

The poll was conducted by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute from February 19 - 24. Quinnipiac surveyed 1,405 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percentage points.
