Step Out and Enjoy a Night With Your Neighbors

Tonight, Aug. 2, is National Night Out in Phoenixville and across the country.

With three locations, if you live in the borough chances are you can easily walk to one.

Come celebrate National Night Out Tues., Aug. 2. This is a multi-location event in Phoenixville that’s part of a national movement to promote police-community relations and working together toward crime and drug prevention. Phoenixville joins several other area communities hosting National Night Out events.

The event’s been part of the community for at least five years, according to Michael Hill, president of Phoenixville Town Watch. He said he hopes the event creates a “sense of camaraderie” with Phoenixville Police.

“I really hope the people meet the police and become friendlier with the police,” Hill said, noting that sometimes people are scared or unwilling to come forward and report crimes in the community.

National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association for Town Watch, and while the police have taken the lead on the event in the past, as the Phoenixville Town Watch group became more cohesive, it's taken on more responsibilities around National Night Out.

In the past, the event was multi-location, but in recent years it went back to being at a single location.

“Police said there was more a sense of an intimate community when there were multiple locations,” Hill said.

Local police will be on hand this year to meet and speak with residents. Additionally, guest speaker Chester County Sheriff Carolyn Bunny Welsh will talk about the role of the sheriff, and the night’s activities will feature face painting, a barbecue thanks to Bridgeside Deli and Grille, a chess competition and more.

The Phoenixville Town Watch is partnering with Royal Bank America, as well, and that’s one of the locations of the National Night Out events Tuesday.
