Video: Flags Will Fly High on High Bridge

Sen. Andy Dinniman and the VFW kicked off a program to hang flags to bedeck the newest bridge in the borough.

Sen. Andy Dinniman (D-Chester) and John Lorusso of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1564 were on hand to kick off a flag program on the Veterans Memorial Gay Street Bridge on First Friday.

During holidays and downtown events, flags will be hung from the bridge. The senator called the bridge "beautiful" and said the flags will provide a nice visual for those crossing the bridge.

Flags will be added as funds are raised. The VFW will help raise those funds. By July 4, Dinniman said he hopes to have 12 flags on the bridge. By Veterans Day, he said the bridge will be full of flags.

"Today, we wanted to celebrate the beginning, which is four flags," Dinniman said.

The project presents one minor technical difficulty. Phoenixville's bucket trucks may not be sturdy enough to sustain the wind shear on the bridge, so Dinniman said he might be able to get a special truck to help out.

Lorusso noted that when marching across the bridge during the Dogwood Parade, he could feel the wind shear cutting across the bridge.

The bridge was closed briefly for the ceremony on First Friday, June 3. To see a snippet of Dinniman's remarks, click on the attached video.
