Weekend Planner: A Patriotic First Friday in Phoenixville and More

"Splintered Sunlight" wraps up the summer concert series.

Whether you’re looking for some Grateful Dead tunes, hand-crafted metal work, a few laughs, an opportunity to volunteer while enjoying the outdoors or a movie the family can enjoy, this Labor Day weekend offers a variety of activities for young and old.

Phoenixville First Friday

Where/When: Bridge Street, Phoenixville, Friday, Sept. 2, 6 – 10 p.m.

Why Go: Kick off Labor Day weekend with an evening of events celebrating the theme of “Patriotism.” Grateful Dead cover band “Splintered Sunlight” is scheduled to take the main stage at 7 p.m. See how Phoenixville’s downtown restaurants, shops, vendors and volunteer community groups start a three-day weekend.

Phoenixville Trash Walk

Where/When: Bridge and Gay Streets, Phoenixville (meet under the Gay Street Bridge), Sept. 4, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Why Go:  As a consequence of Hurricane Irene, the area along the French Creek behind Bridge Street has accumulated more trash than usual. Come join community residents and help keep this area clean. Bring gloves, trash bags and any other tools you might find necessary. All ages invited.

First Saturdays at Wendell August

Where/When: The Historic Barn at Main Street Exton, 103 Woodcutter Street, Exton, Saturday, Sept. 3, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Why Go: Wendell August created and perfected the craft of hand-hammered aluminum giftware, a tradition that continues today. First Saturday festivities include children's activities, a free hand-hammered souvenir, refreshments and prizes.

Stoogeum Open House

Where/When: The Stoogeum, 904 Sheble Lane, Ambler, Saturday, Sept. 3, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Why Go: This is the world's only museum of Three Stooges memorabilia, containing close to 100,000 items related to all things Stooge.

Cost: Admission is free but donations are appreciated.

Movie Under the Stars

Where/When: Limerick Community Park, Swamp Pike and Zeigler Road, Limerick, Sunday, Sept. 4, 8 –10 p.m. (Movie begins at dusk.)

Why Go: Bring a blanket or chairs and relax in Limerick Community Park to watch “Toy Story 3” on the big screen. Refreshments will be sold to benefit the Manderach Memorial Playground Renovation Fund.
