West Nile Virus Found in Chesco Mosquito

This is the first mosquito with West Nile found in the county this year.

A mosquito in Chester County has tested positive for West Nile Virus, Chester County health officials said Tuesday.

The mosquito was collected June 24 from a trap in Uwchlan Township, the Chester County Health Department said.

This is the first mosquito with West Nile found in the county this year. Mosquito traps are placed around the county as part of a routine surveillance for the virus, officials said.

"The chance of contracting WNV from an infected mosquito is small and chances of becoming seriously ill are even smaller," the County Health Department says, but recommends residents take precautionary steps, including disposing of any open containers that may collect water and treating stagnant water that cannot be drained with Bti products.
