Where Should Alcohol Be Sold in Pa.?

An inflammatory ad set off debate.

Last week Patch shared an ad spot that claimed that selling beer in Pennsylvania grocery stores would lead to the death of children.

The ad was paid for by the union representing employees of Pennsylvania's state-run liquor stores.

Patch readers agreed that the ad was inflammatory, but had different opinions about the sale of liquor in the commonwealth

User Roxy wrote: "I am totally for privatizing the selling of all liquor, including beer and wine in grocery stores. I like selection, good customer service, and have had it with state employee "attitudes" (specifically, in the Acme store). PA's system is antiquated and does NOT serve the customer."

"I am 37 and can't even buy Sudafed at the grocery store without getting IDed," user Sean Fox wrote. "I think they are more then capable of IDing beer buyers. You know, like they already do for cigarettes."

"Why not expand the State Store system to beer and wine?" user John Child asked.

Ralph Meyer said he supported the state-run stores. "Our local state store has more variety that I've ever seen in liquor stores in states where there is no state store and all of them are private," he wrote in the comments. "There are also a lot of people who work for the LCB who would be put out of work if the LCB were dismantled."

What do you think? Where should alcohol be sold in the commonwealth? Take our poll above.

I travel for a living and every state that I've been in that has private liquor stores has no variety (only high sellers) and people who know nothing about the wines or spirits they're selling. If it goes private then the wines I like to try will disappear and so will my friendly beer distributor. Wal-Mart doesn't need any more $$$$

A monopoly is what it is, even if you put lipstick on it. 28% Johnstown Flood tax...follow the money.

The unions are using the global warmie tactic in this creepy ad. Selling booze in stores will kill polar bears too...the baby ones.

Vote against anybody, ANYBODY that supports the government monopoly. Whether they are a democrat, republican or independent. We are (along with Utah) the joke of the country for continuing this prohibition era government program.

It's all political bull. This is the first state I've been that state runs liquor stores and privatize dmv. It's all political greed. Other stated liquor is private stores that know their product. To think state has to train people to know their stock is dumb. People come here from other states and can't believe it. Or the fact to buy liquor in another state is illegal. Wth?! Going to stop residents from buying food or gas next?! PA is more expensive in liquor and gas so they just want to rip off the people more. Thought this was a free country? They are greedy politicians trying to scare people and it's pathetic!
