Becca’s Restaurant: Morning Dining at its Best

Brunch is an elegant and relaxed affair at this Whitehorse Road eatery.

Dining out isn’t just about dinner. Sometimes, after a good night’s rest, you want to enjoy the sunlight streaming through a window and have a leisurely, filling meal that someone else prepared that morning. Brunch at is a physically lovely and culinarily tasteful way to start your day.

Both the Brunch ($20) and Premium Brunch ($24) begin with a goblet of fresh-squeezed orange juice and a plate of fresh fruit. Our fruit plates featured blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, honeydew and cantaloupe surrounding a luscious and juicy slice of fresh pineapple. The orange juice had the right amount of pulp in it to remind us of fresh oranges and was a refreshing beverage for the entire meal.

A personal basket of pastries also comes with both brunches. Our basket contained a wonderful array of baked goods: fruity apple and walnut muffins, oaty chocolate chip cookie bars, salty beaten biscuits, sugary cinnamon doughnut holes, buttery crumb cakes, smooth banana bread and a perfectly glazed doughnut. We feasted on about three quarters of our basket, then left the rest for “dessert” after our entrée.

The day’s brunch entrée menu had nine different choices, distributed between traditional breakfast and lunch items. A vegetarian omelet is always one of the choices, as is French toast. Premium brunch is simply higher-priced entrée items, usually crab or filet mignon. Sides, such as sausage, scrapple or potatoes are $4 extra.

Sue chose the seafood crepes from the premium brunch items. She received two large, delicate crepes rolled and filled to bursting with diver scallops, crab, lobster, zucchini sticks and asparagus spears. It was heavenly! We hadn’t been sure that anything could be better than the pastry basket. We were very wrong. A side of lightly pickled cucumber strings over buttercrunch lettuce was an interesting and enjoyable counterpoint to the rich seafood.

I chose the strawberry pancakes with fresh strawberries, strawberry sauce and vanilla bean whipped cream. I received three light and fluffy pancakes without a spot of grease that were layered with fresh strawberries. More strawberry sauce would have been nice (I was offered syrup, but declined so that I could enjoy the fruit flavors without extra sugar), but the vanilla bean whipped cream perked up the pancakes nicely.

Sue had coffee (also included in the brunches) and we picked at the rest of our pastry basket. Our server offered us a dessert menu, but we were so full, we couldn’t even look at it. We’d thought about sides, but considering that I barely finished my entrée and Sue took home some of her crepes, we were glad we hadn’t. The kitchen returned Sue’s crepe in a cute basket made from aluminum foil.

Service was friendly, attentive and genuinely wanted us to have an enjoyable meal. The restaurant, with its large windows that let in the sun, is made for lingering over coffee or a bottle you’ve brought to share with your table. No one rushes you and the food is meant to be savored, exclaimed over and truly enjoyed. In short, when you want to “dine” on Sunday morning, try brunch at Becca’s.
