Forge Theatre on the Move?

The 50-year-old theatre company is putting its First Avenue venue up for sale.

Editor's note: the following release was provided by Jan Swarr of the Forge Theatre.

At the 50th Anniversary Awards Banquet held Saturday, July 28 at , the Board of Directors announced an exciting new direction for the Phoenixville institution.

President Jim Kelsh reported that the Board of Directors has instituted a search for a new building and location for Forge Theatre.

"While our productions keep pace with the times, our physical plant is aging. Much of our infrastructure is beginning to break down. Now is a good time to test the market for interest in our First Avenue property and what other locations would meet our needs."

Kelsh announced the formation of a building committee and a fundraising committee. He also announced the First Avenue location would be put up for sale.

He further stated, "Phoenixville has been our home and we have great affection for the community. We are convinced we can continue to serve our audiences, actors, and the community with a modern, newer facility for 50 more years. We hope to announce the results of our search within the year."

I have seen many, many wonderful productions at Forge (musicals, dramas and comedies), and I wish the marvelous Ms. Swarr and her theater troupe the best of luck as they take Forge further. I am also glad to see them move from their current location, as I think the neighbors are less than courteous to the patrons. More than once, I have heard unkind comments when returning to my car after a show.

Since it is apparent that a move from First Avenue has been approved by the Board of Directors, I would strongly urge the members of Forge Theater to find a location in Phoenixville. Perhaps a joint venture with the Colonial Theater would result in multiple and shared uses for the former Phoenix Newspaper building, or a home could be found at Franklin Commons. Friendship Fire Company is an available building and has parking, too! I'm sure there are other potential sites within the borough to keep this institution in Phoenixville. Please try to keep Forge Theater in Phoeniville!

Is the plan for Forge Theater to move out of Phoenixville, or just another location IN Phoenixville? I would hate to see the theater leave the borough... it would be my hope that another theater organization would move into the space. I can't imagine Phoenixville wanting to lose such an institution and cultural centerpiece.

I too have enjoyed many good shows at the theatre over the years. Hopefully one of the things that will be looked at in searching for a new venue will be parking. That has been a major problem with the existing location.
