Phoenixville Artist is Bringing "Sexy Back"

Actually this IS your grandparents' sexy.

Melissa Karlson is a Phoenixville artist who is bringing sexy back.  She's bringing it back in fun forms that kept the troops fighting for truth, justice, apple pie and America back in World War II and even before.

"I'm very inspired by the women of the 40s and 50s," Karlson tells Phoenixville Patch. "And just the feminism and the soft beauty, and sexiness."

Karlson's work is based largely on the pin-up girls of the 40s and 50s. She uses actual pin up artwork in her creations. She makes some of the old images into magnets. "I also have light switch covers, and some (of the other works she's done) are framed."

She often displays her work at merchant events like the Main Street Ladies nights and other festivals.  "I also have an (online) etsy shop.  It's called Frisque studio at etsy dot com." The online store features more of Karlson's and made jewelry, pin up art and "vintage pieces."

Karlson seeks out the images that she uses to make the magnets, paper weights, light switches and other creations. "If you go to old bookstores they have lots of these images in books and calendars" she explains.
