Great Valley Republicans Endorse School Board CandidatesRich McSweeney and Lani Carrow Win Endorsement

Great Valley, PA – On April 20, 2013 Republican Committee people elected by Republican voters in Great Valley’s School Board Region I (Charlestown Township and East Whiteland voting precincts one through four) endorsed candidates for the May 21 primary election.

Rich McSweeney and Lani Carrow were endorsed for Great Valley School Board from a field of four Republican candidates.  Though the incumbent Region One Directors were among those considered, they garnered only two of the 10 votes cast by Republican Committee people.

Deb Abel, East Whiteland Republican Committee (EWRC) Chair, noted that she was proud of the transparent manner in which the endorsement was conducted. “Our Committee posted an open notice to the community for those interested in becoming Great Valley School Board Directors for Region One. I am glad we could involve the whole community in becoming School Board members.”

Abel also noted,  “Newly elected Great Valley School Board Directors will be negotiating a new teacher’s contract worth well in excess of a projected $50 million per year—two thirds of the education budget. Negotiating a fair and affordable contract will be critical.”

According to now-endorsed School Board candidate Rich McSweeney, “While the School Board has cut direct services to students, cut student programs, and parents are asked to pay activity fees, the incumbents are intent on hoarding a skyrocketing surplus of approximately $26 million dollars surplus (equivalent to over 40% of a year’s Real Estate taxes). The skyrocketing surplus puts more money into the bank at the expense of parents, taxpayers, and student’s classrooms. The incumbent’s insistence on holding over 40% of a year’s real estate taxes in surplus goes well beyond the bounds of reasonableness and our students are not reaping the full benefit of the increasing investment their parents are asked to pay.”

With a background in corporate Human Resources and staff development and actual classroom work in that field, now-endorsed candidate Lani Carrow focuses on the need for classroom resources to enhance educational outcomes: “I have worked for a variety of private businesses who understand that investment in their own employees is critical to the success of their enterprise. They realize money can’t be wasted when it needs to go there. As a community, aren’t we prepared to do the same for our students? “

EWRC Vice Chair Mike Matkovic is quick to note that, “We are all committed to a pro-education slate of candidates. I have a child in Great Valley School District myself. I believe that Rich McSweeney and Lani Carrow will ensure educational excellence without short-changing anyone in the process. ”

Rich McSweeney and Lani Carrow will face the incumbent Region I School Board Directors as the only endorsed Republican candidates in the May 21st primary election.
