"Valley Maid Inc., located at Taylor and St Mary’s streets, was formed in 1947 and was a major supplier of potato chips and related snack items in the east.

"Originally started in Kimberton in 1947, the company moved to the Phoenixville location in 1950. By 1965 the plant contained over 50,000-square feet of storage and manufacturing space.

"Stainless steel automatic machinery automatically peeled, washed, de-starched, sliced, fried and packaged raw potatoes at the rate of 6,000 pounds per hour.

"Valley Maid operated 21 truck routes from its Phoenixville plant and distribution depot in Camden, N.J., serving over 4,000 outlets. More than 75 people were employed by the company. The business was sold to Bachman Pretzel Co. in the mid-1970s.

"The building still stands and is occupied by the Montco Packaging Company."
