Schuylkill Township Officials Declare State of Emergency

The state of emergency goes into effect at 8 p.m.

Schuylkill Township officials declared a state of emergency as Hurricane Irene enters the area.

Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Barbara Cohen, along with the Township Manager Mary Bird, the chief of police and the emergency management coordinator collaborated on the declaration, which goes into effect at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

“The State of Disaster Emergency will exist until the police chief, in consultation with the township roadmaster, the Valley Forge Volunteer Fire Company and PECO, has communicated that the township roads are safe and passable,” the declaration states.

Township residents are urged not to call the township’s main number at 610-933-5843 because it will not be staffed.
