Weekend Planner: Experience a Mind-blending Event and Other Activities

TEDxPhoenixville speakers share their thoughts on the brain.

A weekend of creative thinking, musical time traveling, healthy living, bingo playing and eating for a worthy cause awaits those looking to get out and about in and around Phoenixville.

Second Annual TEDxPhoenixville

Where/When: The Colonial Theatre, 227 Bridge St., Phoenixville; Saturday, Sept. 24, 10 a.m.

Why Go: The theme for this year’s event is MindBlender. Join folks at the Colonial Theatre and find out what that means. Speakers will present their perspectives on the brain and the mind during the second year of this innovative event. Patch will have a full-length article on TEDxPhoenixville later on Friday afternoon so stay tuned.

Longaberger® Basket Bingo

Where/When: Kimberton Fire Company, 752 Pike Springs Road, Phoenixville; Sunday, Sept. 25, 12 p.m.

Why Go: Come out for a great time playing bingo, as well as the chance to win jackpot games, raffles and door prizes. Refreshments will be available for purchase or you can bring your own snacks/beverages. Gather your friends and family and come spend the afternoon in the Covered Bridge Room at the Kimberton Fire Company.

Cost: $20 for 20 games

Second Annual Family and Friends Bistro Night Benefitting Operation F.O.C.U.S.

Where/When: Bistro on Bridge, 208 Bridge St., Phoenixville, Sept. 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 5 – 9 p.m.

Why Go: Operation F.O.C.U.S. (For Our Children’s Uncompromised Safety) provides a free, safe, post-prom celebration for the students of Phoenixville Area High School, as an alternative to after-prom parties where drugs and alcohol may be present. With this event, Bistro on Bridge will donate 20 percent of your food bill to Operation F.O.C.U.S. (You must use the coupon found on the Operation F.O.C.U.S. website when placing your order for the organization to receive credit. ½ appetizers and daily discounted specials not included.)

Cost: Varies depending on order.

The Take Me Back Concert

Where/When: Chester County Historical Society, 225 N. High St., West Chester; Saturday, Sept. 24, 7 p.m.

Why Go: Take a trip back to the 60s and 70s with the “Horn Band” music of Big G and the Cool Cats, with a special tribute to the groups Chicago and Blood, Sweat and Tears. Also, four vocalists will sing such Motown classics as “Domino,” “Mustang Sally” and “Respect.” And finally, no musical event from that period would be complete without an appearance from Elvis. Tickets available at the historical society in advance or at the door, and at Taylor’s Music Store, located at 116 W. Gay St., West Chester.

Cost: $8 for historical society members, $10 for non-members.

 WALK/RUN/BIKE for a Healthy Lifestyle

Where/When: Along the Chester Valley Trail, starting at Wegmans in Malvern, 50 Foundry Way; Saturday, Sept. 24,; check-in 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the Timber Room.

Why Go: State Rep. Duane Milne and ACTIVATE Chester County sponsor this walk/run/bike event to raise awareness of the importance of healthy lifestyles and to benefit the Chester County Food Bank. Other activities include a scavenger hunt at Wegmans, kids' crafts, face painting and a visit from Smokey Bear. Please bring a canned good to donate to the food bank.
