You Got It: Everyone's Correct in Then and Now

The photo depicts the former high school.

A plethora of Patch readers knew the answer to this week's Then and Now Phoenixville photo.

Congrats go to Larry Ritter, BW, Matt Fink, Peter C. Brown, Mr. Ed, Mark Chester, Mark Yanchek, Sid Yancek (via e-mail) and Joe Korzec. , provided by The Historical Society of the Phoenixville Area (HSPA), shows the former Phoenixville High School.

With many correct guesses come many recollections, and here's my personal favorite from Mark Yanchek:

Old P.H.S. What a convenient location. Ring ring goes the bell. Race across the street to the Gateway, get a fountain cherry coke, play the jukebox and pin ball machines and hang out. The motor heads would go to Dorny's Mobile Station on the same corner. Sounds like a Chuck Berry song.

Our next photo will be up next Monday morning, bright and early at 6 a.m. Thanks to everyone for participating and thanks to the Historical Society. Check out the society's website, as there are two events, including a free living history exhibit, coming up soon.

Here's the word from HSPA on this week's photo:

Phoenixville High School stood at the corner of Nutt Road and Gay Street where the Phoenixville Hospital stands today. There was an inscription carved over the door: 'Righteousness exaulteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.'

Constructed in 1911, it served the students of Phoenixville until 1957 when the high school moved to the currentlocation at Gay Street and City Line Avenue.

The land was acquired by the adjacent Phoenixville Hospital and the building was razed.
