Turnout played critical role in tight race

Democrat Michael Speck will be the next mayor of Phoenixville following a close race.

Speck defeated Republican Ken Buckwalter by 29 votes. There were seven write-in votes

Speck will take the over the job from Democrat Leo Scoda who decided not to seek a fifth term as Mayor.

"I want to thank all the voters and the Phoenixville Democratic Committee," Speck told Phoenixville Patch in a brief phone interview once the unofficial results were tallied. Speck congratulated Buckwalter for "running a hardfought race"

Speck is currently on the Borough Council representing the East Ward.  He will continue to serve in that position until his swearing in in January.  Council will appoint a new representative for the East Ward once Speck is sworn in as mayor.

Regardless who the mayor is that person has to work with borough council to get things done. And I do wish that party politics would take a break and the people we elected start thinking of the citizen and NOT just the business owners along Bridge St. Yes the business owners mean a lot, a heck of a lot but so do the residents. And at times it seems as though borough council forgets about the residents.

Barbara, agreed, low turnout this year. I voted around 2pm and there had been less than 90 voters at that polling place so far that day. And, yes, let's put party 'bs' aside and acknowledge that candidates are elected by the citizens of the Borough and they work for all of us. Good luck to our new mayor and council members.

Yes, Average Citizen, it was clearly a landslide victory. Never before have I seen a clearer mandate. *eyeroll*
Kristin Pesnell November 08, 2013 at 02:14 PM
Congratulations to Michael Speck! I had the pleasure of meeting both men. I was really torn when I voted. From my understanding of both candidates, Speck was going to continue with the same old thing while Buckwalter would have brought some change. On the flip side, I was bothered by Buckwalter speaking through an anonymous blog in the past. Maybe he felt outnumbered as a Republican and it was the only way he could speak up. But to write a letter to yourself - and then answer it??? In my opinion, the political party of the candidate is really irrelevant when it comes to who is Mayor. Correct me if I am wrong, but the Mayor of Phoenixville basically polices the police and votes if the Borough Council vote is tied. Once again, in my opinion, whoever is on Borough Council and especially who is on the school board is more important and has more effect on my life than whoever becomes mayor.
Kristin Pesnell November 08, 2013 at 02:22 PM
Average Citizen, clearly half the voters don't want Ken Bulkwalter to just go away. You're personal view does not reflect the average person in Phoenixville, but from your language and behavior, you better represent the Average Jr. High student. Try signing your own name before you cast a stone!
Average Citizen November 08, 2013 at 05:21 PM
Kristen, Buckwalter has run for three different offices in the past two years and lost everyone. This race was close only due to pathetically low turn out. How many races does this guy have to lose before getting the hint? Better yet when a guy runs for every race he can (all vastly different jobs) what is his real motivation? To help the people or feed his own ego by trying to assume a leadership role he hasn't been able to earn in the real world? Think about it.
Ike November 09, 2013 at 09:45 AM
2229 voters YES it is low ,, but i think for Pville its alot . Iam right? Not many of the residents vote in town. Which is a shame. Who the heck is this A.V. BOY? You be nuttty than a COKO-COKE PUFF. You were most likey a loser in the real deal, off life..If goofy wantabe hippee call you a goofball , than something is up.... GO HEAD take your shot... You hve a lot of time on your hands when they are not moving..
Kristin Pesnell November 09, 2013 at 09:55 AM
I have thought about it, and maybe, just maybe, the low voter turn out, and a near 50/50 vote is reflective of the average citizen feeling more like me. That there really wasn't a outstanding choice to begin with, and that it was irrelevant who won. Maybe it showed that people want change, but Speck is old school, and Buckwalter's character "seems" in question. I mean just look at the differences. Speck is a nice guy, who went door to door with literature that simply had a picture and a slogan - no new plan for change. He was running on reputation. Buckwalter, on the other hand, had a pamphlet listing a plan for change that sounded good, but not the best reputation (I am referring strictly to blogging and writing letters anonymously in the past). Maybe people want both - a candidate with a great reputation and a plan for change & growth. Both seemed like nice guys, but neither necessarily instilled confidence that they were a great visionary & leader. I don't know anything about Buckwalter's true motivation any more than I know about Speck's. Running for different positions may have been strategic planning for all I know. Neither one impressed me as someone motivated by ego. I do know that Buckwalter is entitled to run for any election he chooses, just as you are free to do so (although if you plan to do so I suggest you sign your name). You are also free to not like him or vote for him, but clearly he was the choice for nearly 50% of the people who voted. I am not persuaded that a greater voter turn out would have changed anything, no matter how much you will that to be true. If people could curb their visceral reactions (that includes me), and try to do a little more meta-systemic thinking before posting comments, it would do us all a world of good. It would also do a world of good to remember that the people we post comments about as well as the people who post comments are, in fact, people. Living, breathing, valuable people with families and friends who live in this town. We often forget this in online social spaces. So constructive criticism and opinions are good, but destructive unsubstantiated language brings nothing to the table. Although I didn't have a preferred candidate, both men have made a valuable contribution to the community in their own way. There is value in diversity and opposing views - it makes us think and work harder (even your comments have some value in that it caused me to pause and consider a response). The candidates were different but both capable of being a good mayor.
Average Citizen November 10, 2013 at 05:07 PM
Kristen, you make some good points but in the end the "best" of two mediocre men won. At lease Speck won't do any damage. Buckwalter would have took his tea party garbage to the Hall and did all sorts of dumb stuff to embarrass the town (like suing us again). Buckwalter is a loser, period. End of story. Good evening, good luck, and have nice life. Peace.

Can someone identify "average Citizen"? Just curious
woods19 November 11, 2013 at 10:17 AM
Sounds like Michael Handwerk
Ike November 12, 2013 at 08:32 PM
Woods19 average Citizen is not Handwerk.. Now think , its kind of easy if you eally think about it.
Well, That's Interesting! November 13, 2013 at 07:59 AM
Ike is a 60 something woman named Suz, so who the heck knows who anyone is anymore
Barbara J. Hein November 13, 2013 at 09:51 AM
I'm all for anonymity in venues such as this but not for the purpose of personal attacks. I know some folks are afraid to express their opinion due to reprisals which is understandable but. . . this social media is supposed to be about expressing opinions and especially in something like Patch with elections and all the things that are happening in and around Phoenixville. But some folks get carried away and type smart remarks and personal attacks and that is not well. . . for lack of a better term COOL. It wouldn't be very interesting at all if everyone had the same opinions and thoughts, now would it?
Barry Cassidy November 13, 2013 at 01:22 PM
I do not think that the description of Ike (not suz...she goes by sluz) is accurate. Although she is aging...as we all are...she still maintains the beauty of her youth and is capable of engaging conversation when she cares to...and has always been a stickler for grammar...as she has corrected me many times about the correct usage of your and you're...and i believe she shows class and finesse in her ability to depict herself an ill educated lower echelon individual. on the other hand i think the average citizen should secure a new moniker as this one is played.
Average Citizen November 13, 2013 at 05:04 PM
Barry, you are a sociopath who has been fired from his last three jobs and badly lost the last election you tried to run for. The last job you were canned from was because YOU got caught posting to yourself and insulting others on your own blog using a fake name (anyone who doubts this, do a google search), so really you just need to go crawl back under your master's leg already. PS- I am not "handwerk". You people are really funny. Keep guessing, maybe one day you'll figure it out. In the meantime thanks for the laughs.
Average Citizen November 13, 2013 at 05:05 PM
Barb, I agree with you and after this, will not insult people online unless first attacked. Have a nice evening.
Barry Cassidy November 13, 2013 at 05:12 PM
yep...it's him. the most hated man in da 'ville.
Average Citizen November 13, 2013 at 06:24 PM
I let the FACTS speak for themselves: http://www.aroundphoenixville.com/2010/06/barry-cassidy-stepping-down-on.html (read the comments) http://www.aroundphoenixville.com/2010/06/barry-cassidy-stepping-down-on.html http://www.phoenixvillenews.com/article/20100717/NEWS01/307179969/phoenixville-council-waits-for-apology-over-blog-comments http://www.phoenixvillenews.com/article/20100717/NEWS01/307179969/phoenixville-council-waits-for-apology-over-blog-comments Just go to the Phoenix.com and search Barry Cassidy. Pages 4 through 8 tell the REAL story about this sociopath. Don't take my word, read for yourself. Ironically the most hated man in the "ville is Barry Cassidy.
Average Citizen November 13, 2013 at 06:29 PM
PS- No Barry, I'm not the fat man that was fired as Manager either. I just happen to know all about your track record and what kind on "man" you are. You think only a few people know and dislike you? LOL! You are considered a joke from West Chester to Norristown. You only means to support yourself at this point is to be a lackey for a local real estate developer as NOBODY else will hire you. That my friend is a FACT. You know, I know it, and anyone with knowledge of the town over the past 10 years knows it. I'm done wasting my time with you, sociopath. Have a nice night. Peace.
Barry Cassidy November 13, 2013 at 09:51 PM
it's him.
Barry Cassidy November 13, 2013 at 10:14 PM
for a while he was richard hertz or something like that. and he posted a lot in the Daily Local. All negative and although i am a D and supported mr. speck...don't like you bullying my buddy bloggy to the point where he called me and asked me if i was bullying him...so i thought i would step forward and call you out bud. for fun of course, nothing malicious... but all that being said...i reiterate my position that it is time you to move on. find another name "king joe" or something maybe "super-x45" (that is a cool name too....). You denigrate the satisfaction that mr. speck enjoyed from an article in his hometown paper by the hate that you spew. stop acting as an internet troll and try to attempt to productively interact with real humans and voice your opinion without attacking people and spewing hate. and that is what it is man...hate. and i love that you hate me. and i do look on the bright side...at least your not stalking me like my other fan.

Average Citizen November 14, 2013 at 08:07 AM
Barry, the articles I posted speak for themselves and no you have never called me about "bullying" anyone. You have met me but not in the way you think. As far as you bullying me, that would not end well for you. I'm about half your age, in much better shape, and this isn't your make believe blog where you claim to beat up 3 union workers in Baltimore and then pee on them (yes he really said that on his blog) You truly are mentally ill. Get some help (though being a sociopath is a personality disorder that can't really be treated). You tried to talk smack, got exposed, and now need to move on. As far as you being a "D", I agree but it doesn't stand for Democrat, it stands for the D word that ends in K and rhymes with sick, which you are.
Ed Roper November 14, 2013 at 01:42 PM
AC, you and I may have had our words, but I'll give you credit for calling good ole' Barry out on his sociopath-like tendencies. Barry, I thought _I_ was the most hated guy in Phoenixville. Make up your mind already. What are you still doing posting here anyway, thought you were "done" with this town.
Average Citizen November 15, 2013 at 06:40 AM
Ed, what is funny is that Barry really thinks people like him (typical sociopath), yet he hasn't been able to get a job for over 10 year outside being the boot licker of a local real estate developer. I know some people in the Democratic Committee and word is that years ago when he thought he should take up Dinniman's Commissioner's vacated seat they actually laughed at him when he left the room. He is not well like by really anyone outside DeMutis and a hand full of "useful idiots". Also Ed, sorry for any past negative comments towards you. I think you may have caught me on a bad day.
Ike November 15, 2013 at 07:27 PM
Average Citizen, you hit the nail right on the head. You told all the truth. Someone who knows the real deal... Ha glad to read it. Hey could you tell the patch readers that your not a Handwerk. I don't know why the most hated man in Phoenixville says that you are. I know the family , and young Handwerks granpop and his pop , really love this guy, as muc as a deer loves hunting season. The grannpop was going to give him what he deserves and he is in his 80s .I do miss old B.C though , gave me something to laugh at . Ok keep telling it like it is. .
Kristin Pesnell November 16, 2013 at 09:10 PM
Seriously, you're clogging up my email. Hopefully you ALL have better things to do then engage in this malarkey. Please, EVERYONE, move on now!
Average Citizen November 17, 2013 at 10:07 AM
Kristen, simply turn off the e-mail notifications. Problem solved. Better yet, why would anyone with half a brain attach their real email address to this or any other BS comment site? Make a specific e-mail account just for signing up for sites like this. Otherwise, quit your whining and move on yourself!
Barnacle Bill January 02, 2014 at 09:02 AM
I was talking to someone over the weekend. They believe that Average Citizen is fat Amy's husband. I remember her setting on the 200 block of Bridge with her crafts. I guess Ike and Average's wife have something in common. It starts with a D and ends with a K. Say what you want but the man gets around.
