Phoenix Village Art Center: Solo Art Show by Todd Stong

On Friday, June 6, as
the Phoenix Village Art Center celebrates 10 years of First Friday Art Shows, the
Center is pleased to present Cloud Pop
by Todd Stong.  It is his first solo
exhibition of paintings since graduating from Brown University this May and
represents his work for the past two years. Stong is a 2010 graduate of
Perkiomen Valley High School where he studied under Artist Susan Klinger.  He has previously exhibited works at the
Phoenix Village Art Center Emerging Artist Show, Franklin Commons in
Phoenixville, and at Brown University.
The show opens at 6 pm on Friday and continues through June 30th.  There will be a guided tour of the
Upstairs/Downstairs Studios beginning at 7:30 pm.  Located at 207 Bridge Street in the heart of
Phoenixville, the Phoenix Village Art Center gallery is open Tuesdays through
Thursdays from noon to 6 pm and Friday and Saturdays from noon to 8 pm.  Currently the Center is taking applications
for its Summer Art Camp.  For more
information call 610-983-9430 or visit the Center’s website at www.phoenixvillageartcenter.org

            In Cloud Pop, Stong explores
what happens when humans leave this world, their machines stay behind.
Self-automated and lonely, our savvy robots begin to experiment—tearing,
digging, sowing, yielding, pumping, splashing, boiling. This is an imagined
glimpse at their post-apocalyptic re-creation story. Stong uses narrative as a
key into painting. Working with invented shapes, characters and gestures, he
create brightly colored worlds structured with strange but consistent logic
that guides his process and his narrative progressions. Eventually, tropes and
inventions make themselves evident, and he focuses on their qualities. In doing
so, Stong explores painting's capacity for narrative and the liminal space
where it dissolves into formalist exploration.
