15 Pa. Students Win Gates Millennium Scholarships

The scholarships, awarded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, pay for any degree at any accredited college or university.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced last week that 15 Pennsylvania high school seniors have been awarded Gates Millennium Scholarships.

Winners are awarded a good-through-graduation scholarship that can be used to pursue any degree at any accredited college or university.

The 15 winning Pennsylvania students are:
  • Dorcas Adedoja, who attends Northeast High School, Philadelphia;
  • Radhika Adhikari, who attends South Philadelphia High School, Philadelphia; 
  • Ana DeJesus, who attends John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls' High School, Philadelphia;
  • Lypheng Kim, who attends Mastery Charter High School, Philadelphia;
  • Angello Madison, who attends City Charter High School, Pittsburgh;
  • Reginald Nelson, who attends Mastery Charter School - Thomas Campus, Philadelphia;
  • Son Nguyen, who attends South Philadelphia High School, Philadelphia; 
  • Karen Pham, who attends Girard Academic Music Program, Philadelphia;
  • Justin Platt, who attends Chester High School, Chester;
  • Jawad Pullin, who attends Mastery Charter School - Pickell Campus, Philadelphia;
  • Imani Richburg, who attends West Philadelphia Catholic High School, Philadelphia;
  • Juan Pablo Sanchez, who attends Easton Area High School, Easton;
  • Kamri Staples, who attends STEM Magnet High School, Chester;
  • Chester Thai, who attends The Episcopal Academy, Newtown Square;
  • Alexander Tieu, who attends Roman Catholic High School, Philadelphia.

Established in 1999, Gates Millennium Scholarships "provide outstanding low-income African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline they choose," the Gates Foundation said in a statement.

The foundation awards 1,000 scholarships per year. California and Texas had the most scholarship recipients, with 187 and 114 respectively.
