I haven't decided whether or not to sell my home.  But in the case that I do, what are some good curb appeal ideas to implement during the Fall Season?

The Fall Season is beautiful and you can capture that beauty all around the exterior of your home to create great curb appeal.  Be sure to keep your grass cut and edged as well as bushes trimmed.  If you have large bushes in front of your house, that cover your house,  you may want to think about removing them for more flowing plants that allow your home to be seen.  Lighting is especially important as we will lose some time with the sun.  The front light should be newer and bright as well as any lights you put in the flower gardens out front or spotlights shining to the house.

Be sure that your windows are cleaned inside and out.  If you are at the end of September when you list a few pumpkins strategically placed can add curb appeal as well as potted colorful mums.  Mums and cabbage in the garden or perhaps some whimsicle grasses will add to the curb appeal.

During any season you want to be sure that the exterior of your home is clean and neat.  Keep the driveway clear of debris, trim back trees, keep garage doors and shed doors closed and if possible trash cans/recycle containers out of site.

Can you provide a few ideas on "updating" a home without spending a lot of money?

Cleaning your home top to bottom will add much shine to your home and this includes the interior and exterior.  Here are some other ideas to make your home updated for buyers:

  • Replace old faucets with new brushed nickel including shower heads;
  • Replace outdated lighting fixtures, including exterior fixtures;
  • Freshly paint the walls in a earthy color and the trim in bright white;
  • Add shutters and paint the front door;
  • Take up carpet if you have hardwood floors underneath and polish them so they shine;
  • Remove all clutter; a good rule of thumb would be small surfaces only have one item and larger surfaces have 3;
  • Remove excess or oversized furniture from the house;
  • Add solar lights to light the path to the front door;
  • Remove dark thick window treatments and replace with shears;
  • Put new updated bed coverings on all beds;
  • Replace old lamps with new lamps;
  • If in the budget replace old kitchen and bathroom countertops with Corian or Granite;
  • Replace old hardware on cabinets with new updated brushed nickel hardware;
  • Replace the doorknobs on all doors, including exterior, as well as the hinges if they are outdated with new modern hardware.

These are just a few ideas on how to update your home on a budget.
