I Want You to Join Me

Tim DeChristopher made a statement before the Judge sentenced him to 2 years in a Federal prison for disrupting what was later deemed an improper lease auction

Tim DeChristopher made a statement before the Judge sentenced him to 2 years in a Federal prison for disrupting what was later deemed an improper lease auction, “I am not saying any of this to ask you for mercy, but to ask you to join me.”  The dignity and courage shown by Mr. DeChristopher is inspiring and terrifying.  (Please read his entire statement at http://www.commondreams.org/view/2011/07/26-13.)

I am ready to join him, I am going to take that proverbial flying leap. Ever since my arrest at the 1st Tar Sands Action I have been teetering on the edge, not quite an activist in my mind, and yet viewed as one by others. At a recent event I was told that this was my “calling”, and that I needed to “be a leader”. And like the statement from Mr. DeChristopher, this both inspired and terrified me.

But I am ready, and I have a plan. And I think it is a pretty good plan. It is simple really, draft a national strategy based upon the 3E’s: environment, education & equality. Build a strong foundation through communication, collaboration & cooperation. Convert issues into actions. Invite legislators to listen, representatives from existing organizations to speak, and everyone to join in.

We are at a crossroads. And it is time for each of us to take a stand. We can no longer be willing to sit idly by, trusting that some nameless, faceless “other”, is making decisions regarding our well being. We have seen how simple it is really, to infiltrate a political party and hold the rest of us hostage.

I now have a simple proposal for you, let’s do it. Let’s take over, you and I. We can start by joining our local democratic committee, help to select & elect candidates. That is a good start right? And then, we will work on campaigns; help draft strategy & platform issues, write speeches, and most important, draft legislation.  Still with me? Next, let’s run local candidates elect those to our school board who will insist on better lessons, more science & math, retrofit schools with solar & provide real food to our children.

We can run for town council, get on zoning & planning, be the economic development committee. That is real power, controlling the budget and developing our home towns. No longer will we have to fight to get solar approved or better recycling, we’ll write the ordinances. And budget? We know how to balance a budget, retrofit schools, cut down energy costs, hold classes outside, and if taxes need to be raised, then do it. But do it fairly, in a balanced way.

That led to my drafting a piece of legislation, the Balanced Budget Fairness Act, one of our first projects will be to get this to Congress. Imagine, for every dollar we give to a corporation, one dollar into education. Every dollar to defense, one to health & welfare. Every dollar to oil, gas, nuclear & coal, one to solar, wind and renewable. And for every dollar to animal based agriculture, one to plant based. This is how we change the world, we start by changing how we spend our money.

Because let’s face it, it is our money. And if we continue to sit back and allow the GOP to continue the pillage of our public land and national resources, selling them to the highest bidder who takes the profits and stashes them out of the country to avoid taxes, then we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Democracy is a participatory sport, and while liberal and progressive voters were busy raising our families, building our businesses, going on vacation, supporting the arts, going to Washington for the occasional rally, especially the one that “restored our sanity”, the GoP was busy running elections and making sure they put Judges & Sheriffs in place, elected Councils & Boards, took over State legislatures, and then they started cutting environmental protections, defunding education & overturning efforts to bring about true equality. While we were distracted by the latest sex tape going viral online & who was doing who at the Jersey shore, Republicans were making it impossible for our kids to afford college while they pillaged our 401ks for pocket change.

I’m here to tell you, it wasn’t magic, and it wasn’t even that difficult. Politics isn’t some esoteric specialty that requires years of training, it is part of our civic duty and our social contract. We can all join Mr. DeChristopher, we don’t have to get arrested, some of us need

By my count the previsous Council was 4 Republicans and 3 Democrats, if I am mistaken, please correct me. The Democrats were: Ms. Mayo, Ms. Dugan & Mr. Specht Republicans: Mr. Reber, Mr. Kirkner, Mr. Gautreau & the seat that was vacated in the North Ward.
CC May 10, 2012 at 06:15 PM
Obama found Osama? Good Lord....
Lisa Longo May 10, 2012 at 06:17 PM
Sorry, Mr. Kirkner was listed incorrectly as GOP< it was Mr. Buckwalter who I meant.
imwatchingyou May 10, 2012 at 06:41 PM
That's correct, lisa. The mayor was the final D for the majority. Also when I find the Pickens interview Ill post it. Tell me how will the Dems justify Legislative, Public and teacher pensions, unsustainable, without raising taxes? Natural gas is in abundance right now because of fracking and at an alltime low 1.74/ cu ft. Why would that not work for oil? And finally, we will agree on one thing; if Clinton was the most prosperous president of this century, could it have been because both Houses were REPUBLICAN for six out of eight years? Nice to see you commented David. Bud, you were right. Can't argue with a bag of doornobs. Peace Out.
Lisa Longo May 10, 2012 at 06:45 PM
Thank you.

Truly a liberal and Occupier, Lisa. Blame everyone but youself for a failed business. Tell me, how do you wake up every day and go to work for the 1% in Rittenhouse Square? Simply mystifying.
Realist May 10, 2012 at 07:05 PM
The town failed your business? You are crazy. First of all you rented a storefront that was way too large for your product. Second you had no clear direction of what you wanted to be. Where you a café, a novelty store, or a home improvement store? Thirdly the customer service stunk. I went into the store several times no one could help me with the home improvement section. I was looking to buy one of the ethanol fire boxes and no one could give me information. You need to stop blaming others and accept responsibility.
Realist May 10, 2012 at 07:07 PM
Don't blame the democrats, she speaks for herself.
David Curran May 10, 2012 at 07:11 PM
I would be willing to bet Romney is responsible for more failed companies than Lisa. Is he a liberal and occupier? Keep drinking the tea, maybe it will wake you up.
imwatchingyou May 10, 2012 at 09:08 PM
He's wealthy and created jobs as well. Romney also gave 7 million to charity. What have you done lately.
David Curran May 10, 2012 at 09:57 PM
I try to get the truth out and let people make their own decisions instead of nonsensically spouting talking points. Have you had a chance to look at the job numbers of your patron saint George Bush?
Lisa Longo May 10, 2012 at 11:00 PM
I always forget how badly sarcasm comes across in writing. There are several points worth responding to. My vision was too big for Phoenixville. It was a mistake to open here. We did have staff that was unresponsive in the beginning. I also find it amusing how people who aren't courageous enough to put their real name so often devolve to insult and innuendo. I have worked for the "1%" for many years. My consulting business is built on working with small business and helping them grow. My specialty is strategic vison and business models. As a matter of fact, Earth Mart had an award winning business plan. And we knew exactly what we wanted to be, you obviously never took the time to speak with me, I was always more than happy to share my vision and reason for opening Earth Mart. And I have never claimed to speak for anyone but myself.
Lisa Longo May 10, 2012 at 11:05 PM
It isn't the Democrats who refuse to raise taxes. Tell me,why does the GOP hate children and women? All they want to cut is education and force their health mandate on my body. Sure, they are all for "freedom", for corporations.
imwatchingyou May 10, 2012 at 11:37 PM
You know, this started out with some good talking points and you asked for my opinion but didn't like it. It wasn't until DC butted in that got my dander up. All I can say is good luck to you and your future. I don't know how you can criticise the 1% and work for them when we know how you really feel about them. As far as DC is concerned, you must be sucking from the Gov't trough since as a sm it? business owner, your truck never leaves the driveway. How do you doit?
Realist May 11, 2012 at 12:16 AM
If your vision was so big why did it fail? Didn't you move it to King of Prussia as well? Oh I should have taken the time to speak to you. Sorry I tried talking to your employes shouldn't they have directed me to you, or told me when you would be there? If you had an award wining business plan what award did you win? Why the Patch continues to publish your rhetoric is beyond me.
David Curran May 11, 2012 at 03:08 AM
Lisa, u do not have to answer to these cowardly anonymous clowns. You have more courage and spirit then they are ever capable of having. Just do as I do-laugh at their ignorance and correct them when they say yet another illogical, factually inaccurate and poorly thought out comment. Watching, any luck with those stats on the Bush administration job losses yet or would you rather talk about the trajectory of the stock market since he left office. Get a clue ( educate yourself) and grow a pair ( stop hiding behind some childish screen name)
Lisa Longo May 11, 2012 at 11:12 AM
Thank you again, you are absolutely right, cowards and clowns hide who they are.
Bud Horenci May 11, 2012 at 12:59 PM
And....once again you are wrong. There are folks on this and many other blogs who are not cowards or clowns but who for any number of reason choose to remain anonymous. Maybe they are business people who prefer to not alienate potential customers because of their views (maybe you should have tried this one). Maybe they are public officials who prefer to not alienate a constituent who they might otherwise regularly agree with. Maybe they fear for their safety because there are zealots who would do harm to folks with opposing points of views. Maybe they just don't want you to know who they are. Cowards and clowns.....please. You really are small minded aren't you. Oh if I could only be as smart as you and David. Then maybe I could be as successful. Amazing.

Federal Bureau of Labor/Statistic Unemployment 2002 Jan. 5.7% Dec 6.0 03 5.7% 5.7 04. 5.7% 5.4 05. 5.3% 4.9 06. 4.7% 4.4 07. 4.6% 5.0 08. 5.0% 7.3 These are Bush numbers according to the Fed 09. 7.8% 9.9 10. 9.7% 9.4 11. 9.1% 8.5 12. 8.3% Tbd Anymore dumb questions or is the Chairman of the Fed lying who is appointed by Dictator Obama. Sleep well DC.
David Curran May 11, 2012 at 03:11 PM
So lets see. From Jan 2008 to the start 0f January 2009 ( all after Bush/Romney type policies have been in place for a number of years) we went from 5.0% to 7.8 %. And from the end of 2009 to present we went from 9.9% to 8.3% ( 8.1% is a more accurate number), under Obama. What exactly were you trying to prove anyway? You had better check your homework because I think you made my point. Because I think you may have more luck comprehending a picture or chart, find a chart illustrating actual job loses. You can clearly see when the train went of the rails and when it slowly tries to come back. For extra credit: Compare and contrast Obama's private sector job creation to Bush's. For Extra-extra credit: Compare and Contrast Obama's performance relative to the manufacturing sector with Bush's You might want to brew a strong pot of tea to wash down the crow you just ate.

Dude are you seriously that thick. Economics 101. If the unemployment rate was lower more people were working. Why don't you prove your theory to me since all you do is ask questions without proving a point. After that go see a doctor for a referral to the Wizzard and ask him for a brain.
David Curran May 11, 2012 at 03:59 PM
You crack me up watchin. On a serious note, if I were to grade your homework I would have to give you an F. The work was probably worth a D-, but you never signed the assignment. Lmao!!
imwatchingyou May 11, 2012 at 04:10 PM
For two people who claim to not respond to an anonymous poster, why do you keep answering?I think the the BRICKYARD is hiring. You should apply you would fit right in. Lmfao hysterically. I'm retired and can do this all day. I've made my 1% living.
David Curran May 11, 2012 at 04:20 PM
Awe come on watching, don't go away mad. I was looking forward to having fun with you all summer and into the fall
imwatchingyou May 11, 2012 at 04:26 PM
Can't match a battle of wits when one is a nitwit. Not mad at all. Still waiting for you to prove your theories. Have an unemployed life DC.
imwatchingyou May 13, 2012 at 12:52 PM
DC where are you? You stated that all I do is spout talking points. You asked for some numbers and got them. I'M STILL WAITING TWO DAYS NOW FOR YOU TO PROVE YOUR REDICULOUS THEORIES, which you either can't prove or are just plain lazy to do some research. Oh yeah, did you here that the Dem National Convention is in Charlotte, NC this year who is anti union and just past the marriage rights act. You dopes can't even get that right. lol
David Curran May 13, 2012 at 03:53 PM
Watchin, as a general rule I encourage people to look up the numbers themselves and reach their own conclusion, If I hear something that is patentedly crazy I will continue to bring it to everyone's attention (hence our exchanges). The problem with you, and other annoymous posters with malicious intent is that they lie and misrepresent themselves. As an example; on March 28th (AAA Gas Prices) somewhere buried in your elegant prose is the declaration that you are an Independent. Fine. As we all should know PA has closed primaries; meaning you cannot vote unless you are registered to a party. In order to vote in a primary you have to register (declare a party) at least 30 days before the primary election. In your election day post (April 24), you stated that you had voted. Now if you are an independent how were you allowed to vote? I think you clearly misrepresented yourself here (or commited voter fraud) But there are more sinister examples of your deceit. In the same AAA post (man u were "en fuego" that day),in refering to me you state "since your are in business", implying that you know me or something about my affairs. Fine. But in several of your recent posts you make remarks stating that I am unemployed and on the dole etc. These remarks you know to be untrue and are libelous. There only intent could be to defame me, hurt my business or embarass my chidren. When I know for sure who you are I plan on taking legal action. Have a Happy Mother's Day Watchin.
imwatchingyou May 13, 2012 at 04:12 PM
Not malicious just figure you to be a OWS by your posts and see your sign on a lawn. Didn't even mention what type of business your in. Although calling me a coward and clown is not insulting? Have a nice life.
