This is My Body

This is my body, and I will not allow the GOP to use it as a weapon in their political war.

This is my body. It is not a platform for GOP political pandering. There are no jobs hiding in my uterus, so why is the GOP intent on spending so much time there?

Considering that conservatives are constantly going on and on and on about how our President is trying to take away their rights, it is very ironic that in the last few months the only legislation the GOP wants to champion has to do with taking away a woman’s right to reproductive health services.

Little by little, over the last decade, the GOP has been trying to overturn Roe v. Wade on a state-by-state basis. Cutting funding here, over-regulating there, turning a blind eye to domestic terrorists who bombed clinics and, ultimately, calling the man who murdered a doctor a “hero.”

Since the 1992 Supreme Court decision that ruled states could pass restrictions on abortion, as long as they “did not create an undue burden on a woman’s access to abortion,” we have seen this gradual restriction and defunding of reproductive health services. Now, in Michigan, North Dakota and other state legislatures, we see omnibus bills seeking to defund all clinics in a backdoor attempt to shut down reproductive health clinics. We cannot stand by and allow this. it is time for women to insist our rights be protected. It is time to tell Congress that we will not allow the GOP to use our wombs for political pandering.

In Michigan HB 5711, 5712 and 5712 will do the following:

  • Enact mandatory “coercion screenings” for all abortion-seeking women
  • Prohibit the telemed prescription of medical abortion, often relied upon by low-income women in rural areas
  • Prohibit all abortions after 20 weeks, except to save a life, even in cases of rape and incest, even if there is a risk of suicide
  • Impose a number of additional restrictions on abortion clinics and providers, making it more difficult and cost-prohibitive for clinics and doctors to continue providing their services
  • All of this in a state that already has a 24-hour waiting period, parental notification requirement, and no abortion providers in 83% of its counties.

Any one of these places a burden on a woman’s access, but together, they are more than a burden: they are a barrier to our right to reproductive health services. What can we do to fight this? Look to our history.

From the NOW website: “In 1992, 750,000 women, men and children turned out for a NOW-organized march in Washington, D.C. They massed behind a banner that declared "WE WON'T GO BACK! WE WILL FIGHT BACK!" It was the largest march and rally ever held in the nation's capital. In addition to the leadership and delegations from every pro-choice organization and hundreds of celebrities, thousands of students from 600 campuses across the country participated.”

There were so many of us there, that when those of us who started early finished the march, there were still people waiting to start.

We need to do that again. Several state legislatures are considering bills that will, in essence, take away a woman’s right to reproductive health services. We cannot allow this. It is time to make our voices heard again. We ask you to join us at the Women’s Strike for Equality, on August 26th.

In 1970, the Woman’s Strike for Equality was held in New York City, Washington, DC and cities nationwide. Hundreds of thousands of women marched. In 2012, we strike again. It is time to fight back, and insist that Congress pass federal legislation to protect our rights, and limit the ability of state legislatures to defund clinics in pursuit of the GOP’s religious zealotry.

This is my body, and I will not allow the GOP to use it as a weapon in their political war. Some people say this is a war against women. I say that does not go far enough: this is a war against reason. A war against common decency. A war against our Constitution.

And I promise you, it is a war the GOP cannot win. I will not allow it. We cannot allow it.

This is my body, and I will use it as my own weapon. I will use it in Michigan. North Dakota. Pennsylvania. Wherever the GOP attacks me, I will fight back. I will vow to work against any candidate who votes for this type of anti-woman bill. I will contribute my time and money to candidates who protect my right to reproductive choice. I will educate myself and others on the issues, and I will help women run for office.

This is my body and my promise. The GOP may have started this war, but I promise this: they will not win!

Since the Republican party seems to believe that life begins at erection, I'm not so sure the whole debate isn't now an unfortunate reflection of how poorly a job this country has done in keeping religion out of politics...and how many men still suffer from uterus-envy, so they'll legislate instead...
Debra June 10, 2012 at 06:59 pm
LISA... if you are trying to organize a local group to support the "National Womens Strike" in August, count me in !!! Happy to help mobilize women in our area. I believe that women are smart. They just need the facts!
Lisa Longo June 10, 2012 at 07:19 pm
Debra, thanks and yes I am working on mobilizing women, on FB, you can check out the National Women's Party 2.0 and also the Equality Action Network, planning to meet on June 24. Don't let him keep baiting you. It risks making you look like the "bad guy". This was an op-ed about a very specific issue. Posts that have nothing to do with this issue don't deserve your time.
Lylia Hoehl June 11, 2012 at 01:37 am
I don't care a wit about your body and what you do with it. I do care about the helpless child you have conceived that your body is housing. I abhor child abuse and murder. I do not want my tax dollars to pay for your "birth control" the ultimate slaughter of the weakess, helpless beings--who may be female! Frankly, I don't want my rights taken away from me--having to pay for your sexual promiscuities. Only cowards slaughter the weak, children or baby girls!!!! I am a woman and I am so sick of your rational that it is your body!!!! Take care of your own property--don't ask me to pay for the slaughter.
Jennifer Reeher June 11, 2012 at 08:40 am
So, you see, there is so much more to a woman’s right to choose than abortion. And there’s so much more to abortion than the “sexually promiscuous” variety. And when you ask us not to have you pay for “the slaughter,” you’re actually already getting your wish; you aren’t paying for it. We aren’t taking away your rights by having you “pay for [our] sexual promiscuity.” We’re just asking that you not attack our rights to be safe and make informed decisions about what is best for us.
My body is mine and mine alone. I agree with Lisa; I don’t need the GOP in my uterus. I have things taken care of in there on my own. I respect your right to choose. If you choose not to have an abortion, I support you in that. If you choose not to use birth control, I support you in that too. I only ask that you give me the same courtesy. And if you can’t support me, at least don’t try to stand in my way. I feel like this shouldn’t be too much to ask from you, from the government, or from anyone. All I want is to be safe and healthy; to remove my access to birth control would be a direct attack on both of those wishes and an attack on my basic human rights.
Jennifer Reeher June 11, 2012 at 08:40 am
And finally, you talk about how abortion is linked with sexual promiscuity which leads me to assume (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong) that you’re probably under the impression that all women who seek abortions are alone (without a spouse or partner), uninformed, involved with multiple partners, and have no other children. But that means that you are disregarding any woman who is seeking an abortion for a multitude of reasons beyond “I’m just not ready for a child.” Other reasons you may want to consider: rape, incest, medical complications with the fetus, and medical complications with the mother. (This is not a comprehensive list, just a list to get you started.)
Jennifer Reeher June 11, 2012 at 08:41 am
Also, you act as if defunding Planned Parenthood and other family planning centers would stop abortion. The interesting truth is, however, that women have always had abortions; women have always known how to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. They actually have records of women in ancient Egypt using naturally occurring substances to end a pregnancy that they did not want. The problem is that many of these methods are not safe. If you get rid of access to safe abortions, you aren’t going to stop abortions; you’re going to make them dangerous. Instead of seeing a decrease in the procedure, you’re going to see an increase in “back alley” abortions. This also means an increase in batched abortions, in women who can no longer have children at all because of unnecessary procedural complications, and even in the death of women during/because of abortions.
Jennifer Reeher June 11, 2012 at 08:41 am
And Planned Parenthood certainly doesn't use taxpayers' dollars to perform abortions. The funding for that procedure is separate and Planned Parenthood keeps very good records on that. Even many of the people who oppose abortion have publicly acknowledged this fact; they only insist on pulling the taxpayer money that DOES go to Planned Parenthood because they know that the majority of Planned Parenthood procedures (the ones mentioned above like birth control and cancer screenings) ARE partially funded by taxpayers’ dollars. This means that defunding the majority of their business would put serious financial stress on the institution and ultimately probably cause them to close. So saying that you’re in favor of defunding Planned Parenthood because you want to stop abortion actually means that you’re basically saying that you want to take away many women’s ONLY ACCESS to reproductive health care (birth control, prenatal care, etc.) - without thought to the serious repercussions that would have, I might add - all because removing that access would also mean the indirect loss of access to safe abortions. And when you think about how many women aren’t even going to Planned Parenthood for abortions, removing that access truly seems criminal.
Jennifer Reeher June 11, 2012 at 08:42 am
So if we allow our government to defund and shut down family planning centers, what are people in my position supposed to do?
Planned Parenthood offers many services beyond abortion, and abortions actually make up only a small percentage of the services and procedures that are actually performed at Planned Parenthood. (Statistics on this were posted above by Phoenixville Resident, so I won't be overly redundant and post them again here.) But Planned Parenthood helps people (mostly low-income women like myself) get birth control, information on sexual health, and cancer screenings, and also provides pregnancy tests and prenatal care for pregnant women who choose to continue a pregnancy. (Not every pregnant woman who goes to Planned Parenthood is getting an abortion.) So defunding Planned Parenthood means getting rid of all of these services, something that everyone who is so adamant on shutting down family planning centers should seriously consider.
Jennifer Reeher June 11, 2012 at 08:42 am
Lylia,
I think that you are really only focusing on one aspect of a woman's right to choose: abortion. The truth is, a woman's right to choose covers much more. I, for instance, am a recent college graduate; I've only been out of school for a few weeks now. I want to be able to make smart and safe choices, and a part of that is making sure that I use trusted and safe methods of contraception. I am not in any position to be starting a family right now. Therefore, my choice to use birth control (I have an appointment at Planned Parenthood later this month) is a choice that I have made not only for myself, but also for any future children that I may have. If/when I become a mother, I want to be able to provide for my children, give them a good and stable home, and make sure that they are taken care of. On a recent graduate's salary, that's just not feasible. Plus, I have a lot of things I’d like to accomplish before I actually consider having babies.

What about the rights of that poor unfilled POD? Nobody is considering that! You know, life of the POD begins at CONSTRUCTION, nobody has the right to take it away from Lisa!
Beelzebub June 11, 2012 at 10:58 pm
I agree. I'm not concerned about Lisa's uterus, unless that is the nickname for her POD. I don't think people need to ask you about your desire to have a POD. I think it's pretty clear that you are storing something in it. That is what storage facilities are for. They house items without making your neighborhood look like a shipping yard at the docks. Who's supporting the PODs? That's what I want to know. Is it the GOP or the Dems? I need to know before I make an informed decision at the next election.
Jennifer Reeher June 12, 2012 at 01:26 am
Actually, the most recent statistics that I've seen show that people are split almost 50/50 on the issue: http://sas-origin.onstreammedia.com/origin/gallupinc/GallupSpaces/Production/Cms/POLL/wcuh3codqksgnbfd9pdccg.gif
(I don't mean for this to be argumentative, just passing along some information.)
Ellie G June 12, 2012 at 02:25 am
I think it's strange assumption from the pro-choice crew that all pro-lifers carry the conservative misogynist banner. Many thoughtful, compassionate, and even LIBERAL women have chosen to reject the lie that abortion is a great equalizer. Abortion is not truly necessary in a society that values women (save for rare complications or ectopic pregnancies). We should be solving the factors that contribute to the demand for abortions. Both sides see this as impossible, but it's truly not. If we put half of the effort (and funding!) into helping our struggling sisters as we do in to this ridiculous fight, we'd be there.

OBVIOUSLY anything POD related is Obama's fault.
Beelzebub June 12, 2012 at 03:58 am
Ed, you're probably correct. He's going to have a tough time being re-elected if he plans on sticking to a pro pod platform. I'd like to bipartisanship on this important issue.
Nick V June 14, 2012 at 03:01 am
You can pretend otherwise, but the truth is that many reasonable and moral people do not agree with you. And that's fine--you have the right to believe what you wish, and to live your life accordingly. But don't act as though you have the right to impose your values on anyone else.
Nick V June 14, 2012 at 03:10 am
You are entitled to believe that from the moment of conception that single cell is a 'child,' but the fact is that many reasonable and moral people don't agree with you. I'm sure you wouldn't want someone else forcing you to live in accordance with their moral values; why would you feel entitled to impose your values on anyone else?
Colin A. Mattis June 14, 2012 at 02:53 pm
Gilligan, as mentioned by numerous others, this is not the venue for discussing YOUR issues with Lisas POD. YOU are wasting MY time and anyone elses who is here to have an intelligent CIVIL discussion about a nationally significant issue. Perhaps you could post a seperate article?
Colin A. Mattis June 14, 2012 at 03:13 pm
Birdfan, This is exactly the type of statement that the person who wrote that post was talking about. It is "Fox News" ignorant. By that I mean you have read the whole article...(or maybe thats the problem and you only looked for something to attack someone about) and because of an error in terminology nothing else matters. They were obviously referring to the Missisippi ballot measure regarding EMBRYOs being considered people. "Even the reddest of red states failed to pass an amendment declaring a fetus is a child." They said fetus when they meant embryo! The point being that while YOU believe that "they are a child from day one" most people do not believe that the fertilized egg is a child for at least a couple months into the pregnancy. BUT that wasn't even the point of the post. It was about how people cant even disagree anymore without someone attacking someone for having a different perspective...hmmn, interesting? Its almost like you proved their point exactly as it was made in the post...hmm?
Aloysius June 14, 2012 at 03:19 pm
Jennifer Reeher hit the nail on the head.
Colin A. Mattis June 14, 2012 at 03:23 pm
Can I be argumentative? The "no where in the Constitution" argument is moronic. If everything that was not expressly guaranteed in the Constitutional was un-Constitutional I could not be making this argument over the internet from my laptop at my kitchen table.
Colin A. Mattis June 14, 2012 at 03:35 pm
I don't think it's a "strange assumption" and I don't know anyone who thinks of abortion as "a great equalizer" The pro-choice folks I know are just that "for CHOICE" What gives you the right to tell the victim of a rape that her abortion is "not truly necessary" You say we should "be solving the factors that contribute to the demand for abortion" While your "pro-life" side may "see this as impossible" the folks who believe in a womans right to choose have plenty of great ideas about how to reduce the demand for abortion. Unfortunately the Right-wing conservative position is anti-choice, anti-education, and anti-protection so where does that leave the rest of us?
Lisa Longo June 14, 2012 at 03:42 pm
It has been said many times: Choice is about more than abortion.
Sex education, contraceptives, family planning, health services, these are also part of what we are talking about. This article is specifically about the GOP attempt to circumvent our Constitution, the US Supreme Court has ruled on this issue, a woman has a right to privacy with regard to her body. My right to choose, does not impede your right to not choose. That is why it is call "choice". On the other hand, insisting that everyone adhere to one single-minded narrow view does violate my civil rights. It really is the essence of the decision. And this is why we need to insist on Federal legislation to ensure our rights are protected, just as the 2nd amendment has been, now we need to stop this backdoor attempt to defund women's reproductive health services in a sneaky attempt to overturn Roe v Wade. http://lisalongo.me/2012/04/10/reproductive-health-wellness-act/

If the egg is not a person, and the sperm is not a person, and at the moment of fertilization, you still do not think it's a person, then you need to visit a "Birthright" home (one in Pottstown, one in West Chester, and not affiliated with ANY religious or political group) to see their models of the developing "fetus", and observe the humane and non-judgemental way to deal with this "non-person", and the would-be mother of same. The "clinics" should adopt some of these ways, and then, perhaps, they could become a real source of education and care of the female reproductive system. When women realize what the cost of unwanted pregnancy really is, in terms of their physical, mental, and spiritual health, they may change their behaviour to avoid these consequences. If they knew no abortions were available, they would resort to the unsafe methods of "disposal", and many would themselves then, die. If you are crossing the street, and a car is coming, do you rush to get across, risking getting hit, or do you stop, and think, and wait until the car passes? Seems simple to me!
