Many Correct Guesses in Phoenixville Then and Now

The photo was of The Masonic Hall, built in 1868 at the northwest corner of Main and Church.

Patch readers brought their “A” Games to last week’s Then and Now photo.

John Keenan pretty much nailed it with the second guess with this comment: “This is an easy one. This is under Masonic Hall on the corner of Main and Church Streets. It is on the Main Street side where the current entrance to the realtor is now. The stone work on the right side was the biggest give away. Also the downward slope helps support this guess. This would be across the street from the Historical Society.”

And that was followed by a lot of agreement, with Phantom stating “there are going to be a lot of winners this week!” and Brad Gubanich chiming in, “Too easy, can we get a do over?”

This photograph was taken in front of Lanyon’s barber shop in 1925 during “Old Home Week” at the top of the hill on Main Street. Note the old boot black chair in front and also the police officers on the bike. This was said to be the first bike that Phoenixville police ever had. The officers are Gene Fogarty on the bike and officer Williams behind him.

The Masonic Hall, built in 1868 at the northwest corner of Main and Church, is still recognizable and has become a landmark over the years.

Come back next Monday morning for another glimpse into Phoenixville's past.
