Decorated Phoenixville Vet Dies at 92

War hero leaves behind a wife of 69 years.

John J. O'Grady, Sr., 92, husband of Frances I. (Hamilton) O'Grady, of Phoenixville, PA, died on Sunday, October 20, 2013 in Season's Hospice.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Peter and Bridget (Doherty) O'Grady.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Phoenixville.

A Retired Bank Officer, he joined the former Farmers and Mechanics National Bank of Phoenixville in 1955. He served as Executive Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors prior to mergers with the National Bank of Chester County, Southeast National Bank and Fidelity Bank. He retired in 1984. He was a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in accounting.

During World War II, Mr. O'Grady served as a pilot with the Army Air Corps. He was a flight instructor prior to duty in England and France with the First Allied Airborne Army, a unit of the Ninth Air Force. A First Lieutenant, he was awarded the Air Medal, Presidential Unit citation, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three battle stars and one Service Arrowhead.

He was active in civic organizations. He was a member of the Phoenixville Chamber of Commerce, Phoenixville Area School Authority, Valley Forge Hospital use study committee. He was also active in professional organizations. He was a Past President of the Chester County Bankers Association, a member of many committees of the Pennsylvania Bankers Association and a life member of Robert Morris Associates, a national organization of bank loan and credit officers.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, 5 Grandchildren: Timothy O'Grady, Shannon O'Grady, Ryan O'Grady husband of Kristen, Katie Roberts and Carly Roberts; 3 Great-Grandchildren: Kieran O'Grady, Peter O'Grady and Helen O'Grady; Daughter-in-law, Mary (Watson) O'Grady and Son-in-law, Frank Roberts.

He was preceded in death by his son, John (Jack) O'Grady, Jr., and his daughter, Patricia O'Grady Roberts, and his sisters, Margaret Curley, Mary O'Grady and Helen Dixon.

Relatives and Friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 148 Church Street, Phoenixville, PA, on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at 11:00 am.

Burial will be private.

Relatives and Friends may call at the church on Wednesday morning from 9:45 am to 10:45 am.
