Ruth Swier, 88

Ruth P. Swier, 88, of Phoenixville, passed away on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012 at Parkhouse Providence Pointe.  She was the widow of Robert E. Swier, who died in 1996.

Born in Phoenixville, she was a daughter of the late Raymond and Mary (Stoy) Peppel. After graduating from Phoenixville High School, she served in the Navy during World War II, worked for the railroad, then became a wife, mother and homemaker.

She is survived by her children: Jane A., wife of Joel Meshey, of Phoenixville, Connie J., wife of Sam Gaines, of New Braunfels, TX, Ann A. Hammaker, of Stowe, Jean M., wife of James Hazzard, of Schwenksville and Richard M., husband of Nancy Garwood, of Gaithersburg, MD; eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Gary Smith Jr., 34

Gary S. Smith, Jr., 34, husband of Patricia M. "Trish" (Lehr) Smith, of West Grove, PA, died suddenly on Jan. 4, 2012 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.  

Born in Phoenixville, PA, he was a son of Michele (Carmichael) Rudzik, wife of Michael Rudzik, of Harbeson, DE and Gary S. Smith, Sr., husband of Michelle Smith, of Phoenixville.  

He was a graduate of the Phoenixville High School where he attended the CAT Pickering school. He then attended the Methodist College in North Carolina and graduated with a B.S in Marketing AIU.  Mr. Smith worked for many years at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and more recently in sales for the Ignite / Stream Energy Company.

In addition to his wife of eight years and his parents, Mr. Smith is survived by one son, Ty Scott Smith; one daughter, Camille Peyton Smith, both at home; maternal grandmother, Margaret Carmichael, of Phoenixville; paternal grandmother, Wilma Smith, of Phoenixville; two sisters: Renee Smith of Linfield, Tiffany Yambrick, wife of Peter, of Pottstown; one step-sister, Danae Rudzik, of Pottstown; one step-brother, Cody Ciolli, of Phoenixville, several nieces and nephews: Madison, Owen, Joss, Rylee, Brooke and Hunter.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Service at the Campbell–Ennis–Klotzbach Funeral Home, Inc., Main Street at Fifth Avenue, Phoenixville, PA on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at 11 a.m.  

Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family.  Friends will be received from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday morning at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the "Gary S. Smith Jr. Memorial Fund" C/O National Penn Bank, 702 South Main St., Phoenixville, PA 19460, which will be used to help support his children.

Helen Dougherty, 86

Helen S. (Pete) Dougherty, 86, wife of the late Robert T. "Doc" Dougherty, of Phoenixville, died on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 in Phoenixville Hospital.

Born in Phoenixville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Alex and Elizabeth (Gombos) Pete.

Helen was a member of Parkside United Church of Christ in Phoenixville, PA.

Surviving are daughters, Roberta Hedges of Phoenixville; Deborah Foresta of Phoenixville; Sharon, wife of David Lambrecht of Spring City, PA; three grandchildren Maria Foresta; Nicholas Foresta; Ashley Lambrecht; sister, Elizabeth Godri of Phoenixville and sister, Esther Oleary of Royersford, PA.

She was preceded in death by her brothers and sister, Andrew Pete, Alex Pete and Julia Hilborn.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service in the Devlin Rosmos Kepp and Gatcha Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 517 S. Main St. at Fourth Avenue, Phoenixville, PA on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at 10:30 a.m.

Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Phoenixville, PA.

A viewing will be held in the funeral home on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Marilyn Young, 73

Marilyn (Hersh) Young, 73, wife of Charles A. Young, of Birchrunville, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, Jan. 1, 2012, in her residence.  

Born in Phoenixville, she was a daughter of the late Warren F. and Velma (Lewis) Hersh. 

Mrs. Young was a 1956 graduate of Phoenixville High School.  She was a member of GraceCrossing Community Church where she was an active volunteer and involved with American Baptist Women.  

She enjoyed traveling and camping, and has traveled up and down both coasts, Canada, Yellowstone and the Rocky Mountains. She enjoyed hiking and was an active member of the Roamers Hiking Club. A homemaker, Marilyn enjoyed counted cross stitch, cooking, baking, gardening, and taking great care of her home and pets. 

In addition to her loving husband of 49 years, Mrs. Young is survived by her sons, Arthur H. Young, of Eldersburg, MD, and Charles W., husband of Marilyn Young, of Hershey, PA; brother, Bryon L. Hersh Sr., of Phoenixville; and grandchildren, David, Annelise, Madeline and Ashley.  

She was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Dell. 

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her memorial service at the GraceCrossing Community Church, Gay and Church Streets, Phoenixville, on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Brent D. Miller officiating. 

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Marilyn’s name to the GraceCrossing Community Church, P.O. Box 126, Phoenixville, PA 19460.

George Heit, 81

George E. “Ed” Heit, 81, of Phoenixville, husband of Fern A. Heit, passed away on Friday evening, Dec.30, 2011, in the Phoenixville Hospital.  

Born in Croton-on-Hudson, NY, he was the son of the late George and Ruth Heit. 

Mr. Heit received a B.S. in engineering in 1952 and his M.S. in engineering in 1954 from New York University. He began his career with General Electric in Schenectady, NY in June 1954, before serving in the United States Army from 1955-1957.  He returned and retired from General Electric Aerospace in King of Prussia in February 1993. He continued as a consultant until 1995. From 1987-1993, Ed served as a Schuylkill Township Supervisor. 

In addition to his loving wife, Mr. Heit is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Heit, of Phoenixville; son David Heit, of Phoenixville; granddaughter, Korinne Heit, of Phoenixville; and sister, Harriet Sandmeier, of Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service at the Campbell-Ennis-Klotzbach Funeral Home, Inc., Main Street at Fifth Avenue, Phoenixville, on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Tresita Beach officiating. Interment will follow in the Valley Forge Memorial Gardens.  

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Valley Forge United Methodist Church, 1890 Valley Forge Road, Valley Forge, PA 19481 or to a charity of choice.

Myrtle Baxter, 82

Myrtle L. (Mashman) Baxter, 82, wife of Charles T. Baxter, of Chester Springs, PA, died on Monday, Dec. 26, 2011.

Born in Port Providence, PA she was the daughter of the late G. Harold and Elsie (Force) Mashman.

Myrtle worked for Dettra Flag Company in Oaks, PA.

Surviving in addition to her husband are son Wilson Cooper and wife Sandra of Royersford, PA; son Edward Cooper and wife Barbara of Ohio; son Bruce Cooper of Phoenixville, PA; daughter Tina Garner of Kinzer, PA; 12 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters Margaret Miller of Virginia, Elsie Koffroth of Ohio, Josephine Young of Phoenixville, Wilma Smith of Phoenixville and Carole Kehr of State College.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, C. Richard Mashman and Harold Mashman.

A viewing will be held in the Devlin Rosmos Kepp and Gatcha Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 517 S. Main St. at Fourth Avenue, Phoenixville, PA on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by a graveside service in Valley Forge Memorial Gardens, King of Prussia, PA.
