The student was struck by a car in the Melrose section of the township.

A Cheltenham High School student was struck and killed by a car while heading to school this morning.

The crash happened at about 6:50 a.m. in the corner of New Second Street and Clarion Avenue in the Melrose section of the township.

A message from Cheltenham School District Superintendent Darlene Davis on the school district’s webpage identified the student as ninth grader Dajanique Brown-Rogers.

According to Cheltenham Police, the victim was struck while attempting to cross the road to her school bus stop. The driver stopped and rendered assistance to the victim.

Brown-Rogers was taken by ambulance from the scene to Albert Einstein Trauma Center and later died.

The crash is under investigation by Cheltenham Township Police Department Highway Safety Unit.

From the superintendent’s message:

“To support our students at the high school, we have mobilized all of our pupil services personnel and have situated them on location at Cheltenham High School to deliver appropriate individual and group grief counseling.  We, as a District, will do everything in our power to fully assist the Brown-Rogers family and will continue to provide emotional support to all members of our District during this very difficult time.”

High school students were notified at about 10:45 a.m. in their homerooms.

Truly sorry to hear of this, my family and my prayers go out to the family. As a resident who lives on New Second Street, hopefully the township will now finally do something to permanently reduce the speeds on this "highway" that is constantly used as a speedway! I personally have went to the township to complain of the reckless speeds people use on this road that is full of residential homes.

Daja was so sweet. Shes a person you'd want to be around. I wish she was still here with us. R.I.P. Daja:) I know you're in a better place now. I'll never forget her.
