Child Rescued from Schuylkill River

On Sunday afternoon, crews pulled a girl from the Schuylkill River near the Route 29 bridge.

A child was pulled from the swift flowing Schuylkill River Sunday in Mont Clare.

She was in the river for nearly 30 minutes after swimming with her family near Lock 60, Oaks Fire Chief William Kasper said.

“She got sucked in by the current and pulled out into the main river,” Kasper said.

Crews set up on the bridge and the Mont Clare water rescue team pulled her out shortly after 3 p.m. on Sunday just downstream from the Route 29 bridge spanning the Schuylkill at the county line.

Following the rescue, the child was taken to Phoenixville Hospital with injuries that Kasper said were not life threatening.

He said he didn’t see the child after she was pulled out, so he was unsure of the injuries she suffered.

“We didn’t fly her out,” Kasper said. “But she definitely needed to go to the hospital.”

He said the rescue went well and that there weren’t any complications of saving the girl’s life.

“The river was up a little bit and the current was pretty swift,” Kasper said.

In addition to Oaks Fire Company and Mont Clare Fire Company, Phoenixville’s dive team, Phoenixville Fire Company, a rescue unit from Linfield and West End Ambulance assisted at the scene.
