Corbett Signs Execution Warrant for Convicted Cop Killer

Gov. Tom Corbett on Monday signed the execution warrant for convicted cop killer Lewis M. Jordan. He is set to be executed on June 18.

Jordan was convicted in November 2009 of the first-degree murder of Philadelphia Police Officer Charles Cassidy in October 2007.

Pennsylvania has not executed anyone since 1999, when Gary M. Heidnik was executed for the murders of Deborah Dudley and Sandra Lindsay. 

There are 190 people currently on death row in the state. 

Jordan, 27, is incarcerated at the State Correctional Institution at Greene. He will be executed by lethal injection.

According to case information from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Jordan was on a six-week armed robbery spree targeting North Philadelphia businesses when, on Oct. 31, 2007, he robbed a Dunkin Donuts on North Broad Street.

Jordan was interrupted by Officer Cassidy, a 25-year veteran, who drew his service weapon. Jordan shot Cassidy in the head with hollow-point bullets before fleeing the scene. 

Cassidy was taken to Albert Einstein Hospital, where he was pronounced dead the following morning.

Jordan was subsequently arrested in Miami and was extradited to Pennsylvania to stand trial. He was convicted on Nov. 24, 2009.
