District Court: Attempted Homicide Charge Withdrawn in Alleged Shooting

Charges were waived to court for John McCaffrey, who police say shot another man on Friday in a Schuylkill Township home.

In district court Thursday, the preliminary hearing was waived for John McCaffrey, 46, of Schuylkill Township, and the Commonwealth withdrew a charge of attempted homicide.

Six other charges, including two counts of felony aggravated assault, were held for county court. McCaffrey was not present in the courtroom. According to Assistant District Attorney Carlos Barazza, bail was kept at $750,000, but McCaffrey will have a bail hearing tomorrow afternoon before Judge William P. Mahon of the Chester County Court of Common Pleas. He is currently in Chester County Prison.

According to police, McCaffrey at approximately 1 a.m. on Sept. 2 in a home in the 1700 block of Quarry Lane. In a criminal complaint, a Schuylkill Township officer wrote that McCaffrey stated he didn’t know what happened during the shooting and had several glasses of wine and possibly a Valium earlier in the evening. The victim suffered a fractured skull and other injuries due to the shooting, according to the criminal complaint filed in district court.
