Firefighters Help CAT Pickering Grad with Cancer Fight

The Phoenixville Fire Department raised funds to help local victims of cancer.

The men of the Phoenix Hose, Hook, and Ladder Co. No. 1 have been for the past three months. On August 12, the company found a very deserving recipient.

Daniel Proulx-Cook, an 18-year-old member of the CAT Pickering graduating class of 2012, was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia on May 8 (and profiled by Phoenixville Patch ). Last weekend, Daniel was presented by the department, mother at his side, with a check to aid him in his ongoing fight with the disease.

The departments fundraising efforts—the most recognizable of which is their “pink” engine 65-1—were part of Community Service Fighting Cancer; a regional effort where local emergency service providers raise funds to fight cancer on a local level.

According to firefighter Andy Klotzbach, 100 percent of the proceeds the department raised went to Daniel and his mother.

Klotzbach said that four of the department’s firefighters graduated with Daniel; a fact that made the moment all the more poignant.
