Man Rescued from Roof of Woodland Ave. Fire

Neighbors propped up a ladder to give the tenant an exit path.

Malvern Fire Company responded within four minutes to a basement fire on the 200 block of Woodland Avenue on Monday morning, but neighbors responded sooner.

"[The tenant] was asleep on the second floor when the smoke detector went off. The house was full of smoke," Malvern Fire Company Chief Neil Vaughn.

The tenant climbed through a window and onto the roof to escape the smoke. As firefighters arrived to the scene, they saw the man climbing down a ladder that neighbors had propped up to give him an escape.

Two people went to the hospital with minor injuries. The homeowner was treated for smoke inhalation, and a Paoli Fire Company member cut his hand during the response.

The call came in at 5:49 a.m. and was declared under control by 6:21 a.m. The cause is under investigation but appears to be unintentional, according to Vaughn.

"Luckily, the basement door was shut," Vaughn said.

Malvern Fire Company was assisted by fire companies from East Whiteland, Paoli, Berwyn, Lionville and Good Will in West Chester.

Edited 1pm to include list of assisting fire companies.

Malvern Fire Company has uploaded some photos and information about the fire—http://www.malvernfireco.com/fullstory.php?id=552. Turns out one of the neighbors (with the Christmas countdown clock, I believe) is no stranger to fire response: "As Ladder 4 was laying the line, neighbors including Paoli Fire Police Captain Kenny Furlong and Malvern PD utilized a ladder to rescue the lone ocupant off the roof."
