No One Injured in East Pikeland House Fire

Several pets were rescued and no one was injured as firefighters battled a blaze in East Pikeland Township on Monday evening.

Fire trucks lined the streets of the 600 block of Wall Street as a fire burned on the second floor of a residence. Police reported no one was injured. The street was dark, calm and clear by 10:40 p.m.

Christina Knapper, the home's owner, reported her teenage daughter lit a candle in her room before she began to vacuum. Then, as she was cleaning, the cord of the vacuum knocked into the candle. The girl noticed a burning smell, but thought it may have been the vacuum.

She turned around and realized the curtain to her room was on fire. She ran out to grab a cup of water to put the flames out, but when she returned, the fire had grown too large for one glass of water.

Knapper and her husband were not home at the time of the fire. Luckily, Knapper said a family member lives four houses down and was able to come over, assess the situation and get emergency responders on scene.

"It's so surreal," she said. "You almost don't believe it when you first hear it."

Two dogs and a cat were saved from the house, along with several pieces of furniture. Responders were able to get the drawers out of the daughter's dresser so that her clothes could possibly be salvaged.

Knapper said her daughter's room is completely gone, while the master bedroom has some damage. Many items in the attic were totally damaged from the fire, as well. The master bedroom's bathroom, which was recently remodeled, was damaged, and according to Knapper, it "doesn't look too nice." Many of the walls in the house have smoke damage.

The family is safe and had shelter for the night.
