Phoenixville Bank & Trust Robber Arrested, Police Say

Arrest of one man for two separate heists caps a nearly nine month investigation.

One man is under arrest and charged in with two separate bank robberies at the Phoenixville Federal Bank & Trust Branch in February and April.

Michael Scott Brown, 23, of West Chester Pike in Upper Darby, Delaware County is being held on $250,000 cash bail at the Chester County Prison.  He faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges for the two robberies. Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan announced the arrest late Thursday afternoon.

The Robberies

According to the District Attorney's office Scott is accused of first robbing the bank on the morning of February 20 at about 10:35 a.m.. In that robbery investigators say that Brown indicated he had a gun although he did not display a weapon. According to investigators Brown said "give me all your money. Nobody move and I won't shoot anybody!"  When the bank manager got up and emerged from his office door, pollice say Brown pointed his finger at the manager as if it were a gun, before fleeing the bank with cash.

Brown is also charged in a second robbery of the same bank branch.  That armed robbery happened on April 16 at 11:55 a.m..  Police say Brown approached a teller and this time he had a black handgun with a white hand grip.  According to an affidavit of probable cause filed in the case, Brown pointed the revolver at a teller and said "give me all your money."  After getting cash from the teller Police say Brown fled to a waiting car, being driven by people who were not immediately aware that Brown had used them to get a ride to and from the bank for the robbery.

Wanted Poster Led to Brown, Police Say

In early May an employee of an unnamed restaurant on Bridge Street saw a wanted poster with the bank robbery suspect's picture and called police.  That led to Brown's eventual capture.

Phoenixville Police Chief Bill Mossman said "This case was solved by the combined efforts of Phoenixville Police, The Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the help of concerned citizens. Citizen tips resulted in key leads that broke the case open. It is very important for citizens to come forward with information so that police can keep violent criminals off the street."

Specific details of Brown's capture and arrest were not immediately released, but the District Attorney said that Upper Darby and Springfield Township Police in Delaware County assisted in Brown's arrest.  Brown was arraigned and is in Chester County Prison awaiting a preliminary hearing in front of Phoenixville Magesterial District Court Judge Ted Michaels.

In announcing Brown's capture District Attorney Tom Hogan said "If you rob a bank we are going to track you down and lock you up. Every bank robbery includes the danger of death, whether we are talking about the terrified employees of the bank, the innocent civilian customers of the bank, or the responding police officers.  In Chester County we come down hard on bank robbers."
