Police: Bags of Suspected Coke Found in Downtown Hotel

Two men face felony charges after police allegedly found drugs in a room at the Mainstay Inn on Bridge Street.

Two young men remain in Chester County Prison after police say they had a pile of bags containing suspected cocaine as well as a small amount of marijuana in a downtown Phoenixville hotel room.

Bryant Royal Baylis, 20, and Brandon Lee Campbell, 19, both of Phoenixville, were arrested on Dec. 8 and both men were charged with felony drug possession with intent to deliver as well as four misdemeanor charges. Baylis is in prison on $50,000 cash bail, while Campbell’s bail was set at $25,000 cash.

On Dec. 8 at approximately 9:30 p.m., Phoenixville officers responded to the , 184 Bridge St., after a customer complained of smelling burnt marijuana, according to the criminal complaint. When police arrived, they were told that a customer had complained around 6 p.m. about the smell of marijuana coming from room 216.

“When we made our way toward the room Officer [Brad] Dobry and I could smell burnt marijuana as we entered the hallway the room is located in,” Officer Thomas Hyland wrote in the affidavit of probable cause filed in district court.

The officers heard male voices inside the room and called for additional units. When more police officers arrived, Hyland wrote that he knocked on the door and Campbell answered. Police placed Campbell in handcuffs and Hyland said he saw a man identified as Baylis.

“I entered the room to find Bryant Baylis sitting at the desk in the corner in front of a large pile of green baggies containing a white powder substance suspected to be cocaine,” Hyland wrote. “On the desk was also a clear jar containing a small amount of suspected marijuana and two unopened cigars as well as a lighter.”

Police obtained a search warrant after taking Baylis and Campbell into custody. A preliminary hearing is set for both men on Dec. 15 in front of District Judge James V. DeAngelo.
