Police: Man Crashed Car Into Many Things, Was Arrested for DUI

Edward John Maksimoski, 66, faces multiple charges.

A 66-year-old Phoenixville man was arrested on Tuesday night after he crashed his car into three metal poles, a curb, a street sign, and nearly hit a police cruiser while allegedly under the influence of alcohol, Phoenixville Police are reporting.

Edward John Maksimoski was charged with two counts of DUI, driving on the sidewalk, and careless driving stemming from the September 18 incident.

According to court documents, the trouble began when Maksimoski drove his Volkswagen Jetta out of the Family Dollar parking lot and, with an officer watching, nearly ran into the grass. Overcorrecting for the error, Maksimoski backed up quickly and hit the guide wire for a telephone pole located behind the district courthouse.

The officer, now no longer a spectator, put on his siren and pulled behind the vehicle. Maksimoski slammed his car in reverse and headed towards the marked patrol car. The officer hit his siren several times to get the man's attention, but he did not stop, forcing the officer to drive his patrol car out of the way.

Maksimoski then drove his Jetta north onto the bicycle path and struck three metal poles cemented to it. Then, again, Maksimoski put his vehicle in reverse and on a collision course with the patrol car. (A slow one, though. The officer, in the affidavit, estimated it was moving at 10 mph.)

No collision happened. Maksimoski drove through the grass behind the courthouse and struck a curb and a “Police Only” sign before police backup arrived and blocked his vehicle.

When officers removed Maksimoski from his car, he smelled like alcohol, had trouble standing, and appeared to have urinated in his pants.  He was arrested for DUI—field sobriety tests were not administered due to the rain and wind—and was taken to Phoenixville Hospital to have blood drawn for testing. After he was livescanned at Schuylkill Township Police Department he was released to his wife.

Edward Maksimoski faces preliminary hearing on October 18.

Ike, don't blame the restaurants. They have done wonders for our little boroght. You have to blame the people themselves...they'd be drinking somewhere else anyway.
