Pottstown Man Accepts Plea Deal in Phoenixville Shooting

A teen was shot in 2012 in what authorities called a drug deal gone wrong.

A Pottstown man has been sentenced in connection with the shooting of a Phoenixville teen in what authorities called a drug deal gone wrong.

Garrett Sterner, 21, of Pottstown has accepted a plea deal in connection with the 2012 shooting of James Mack Brown, 20, of Phoenixville, The Mercury reported. Brown was 18 at the time of the shooting.

Sterner on Tuesday pleaded guilty to charges of robbery with serious bodily harm in connection with the May 8, 2012, shooting that was described at the time as a drug deal gone awry. The shooting was at the Pennsylvania House Hotel on High Street.

Sterner will serve three to seven years in state prison under the conditions of the plea deal, The Mercury said. 

Sterner’s codefendent in the case, Shawn Nafeese Duell Jr., also of Pottstown, pleaded guilty to similar charges last July, The Mercury said, and was sentenced to 7.5 to 15 years in prison.

Sterner was sentenced by Chester County Common Pleas Court Judge Anthony Sarcione in West Chester.
