Tree Falls on Route 29

PennDOT and Verizon crews cleared the scene.

Traffic was interrupted after a large tree fell across Route 29 in Charlestown this morning.

According to Patch reader Tim Griffiths, the tree fell near Union Hill Road. PennDOT and Verizon workers responded to clear scene, as did state police.

A PennDOT rep said she received an email at 11:28 a.m. indicating the road would be cleared in 30 minutes. She said PennDOT had to wait for Verizon to disentangle the tree from nearby utility wires before they could begin clearing it.

This is the section on Rt. 29 that really needs widening, if was even possible.

Bill the tree had nothing to do with the single lane bridge. The tree has been laying on the wires since Saturday. All it took was a tall truck to hit it. PECO had been called Saturday but said they wouldn't do anything because they are Verizon's wires.

If the tree was across the wires since Saturday, who are the public officials who did nothing about removing the tree or closing the road for public safety?

That single lane bridge should have been rebuilt when the other single lane bridge was replaced about 35 years ago.

We called 911 about this on Saturday too and they didn't seem concerned about it, until now!

Based on that pic, traffic must have been a mess. That they would leave that sitting all weekend and mess up people's drive to work is disgraceful.

Take a ride down Rt. 29 from Pothouse Rd. to the S Turns past Union Hill and the GV Nature center. You can probably count at least 4 trees that have fallen over and are leaning on the wires. The fact that PECO and Verizon do nothing about it, not to mention public officials is a disgrace. They'll just wait until the next big storm comes along and knocks out power or phone service. Widening Rt 29 is not possible because of the geography with the big hills on one side and drops on the other (similar to the reason why the Schuykill Express is still only 4 lanes today). Also there are at least 5 houses positioned within a couple of feet of the road.

this tree was sitting like this at least since Saturday afternoon.

Tim, Why should PECO clear a tree off of Verizon's wires? If they aren't on the power lines PECO is not responsible for clearing the tree.

Penndot is responsible for keeping the roads clear. If they have to coordinate between peco and verizon so be it. The State is responsible for keeping state roads clear. Contact your state Representative and State senator to let them know their roads are being ignored by their road crews. There is no excuse for the obstruction being there that long.

There was a great chance to widen that bridge about 20 years ago when an unpermitted illegal wide load trailer hit it and knocked half of it in the stream ... at 2 am on a Saturday. Penndot was willing to do the widening then instead of simply fixing it but Charlestown officials nixed it in the name of "slowing traffic" and "ruining the historical aspect" of the bridge. They had plans to take out the ess turn above Hollow rd too and actually acquired the right of ways to do so but for the same reasons above it was never done.

There was a time when whichever "utility" be it Penndot, Verizon, Comcast, whomever saw a problem tree or obstruction they'd simply remove it with no regard as to "whose" wires they happened to be. You can thank lawyers and an out of control afix the blame where ever a payday can be had mentality for the end of that.
