Upper Providence Board Votes to Fire Police Officer

With a unanimous vote, Michael Mulqueeney was terminated for 'conduct unbecoming of an officer.'

Following an executive session on personnel matters Monday night, the Upper Providence Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on the termination of an officer.

In a brief resolution, Vice Chairman Robert Fieo stated that Officer Michael Mulqueeney fit the criteria for termination under the Police Tenure Act.

“He engaged in conduct unbecoming an officer and violated his official duty as a law enforcement officer in Upper Providence Township,” Fieo said.

Specifically, the statement read by Fieo pointed to two provisions of the Police Tenure Act that give reasons for an officer's termination:

  • neglect or violation of any official duty and inefficiency
  • neglect, intemperance, disobedience of orders or conduct unbecoming an
    officer

The statement Fieo read went on to say that Mulqueeney not only violated his official duty but broke the rules within the department as well.

“He also violated several provisions of the Upper Providence Township Police Department code of conduct and departmental policies,” Fieo said.

Because there is a chance Mulqueeney could file a grievance, following the unanimous approval of a resolution terminating Mulqueeney, Fieo said the township won’t release any other information on the issue.

“The township will make no further comment regarding this matter at this time,” Fieo said.

Chief Donald Sherid was directed to comply with the resolution terminating Mulqueeney's employment.
