Woman Flown by Helicopter, Two Boys Injured in Black Rock Road Accident

Upper Providence Police would not release any information on the crash, which occurred Thursday morning.

A woman was flown by helicopter to Hahnemann Hospital, and two young boys were taken by ambulance from the scene of a one-car accident in Upper Providence Township Thursday morning.

According to Oaks Fire Company Assistant Chief Rich Hughes, a GMC sport-utility vehicle crashed into a utility pole near the intersection of Black Rock Road and Route 29.

"It struck a utility pole and snapped the pole off at the base," Hughes said.

When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, all three passengers—a woman and two young boys—were conscious. Hughes said there was "very minor entrapment."

"We forced open the back hatch of the car," Hughes said, to help free a boy in the back seat.

The boy was removed from the car on a back board. Both children were taken by ambulance from the scene. The female driver was flown to Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia to be treated for her injuries. The helicopter landed on an open field just east of the accident, according to Hughes.

Everyone in the SUV was wearing a seatbelt, Hughes said, and damage to the windshield was caused by impact with the pole.

The accident occurred at approximately 9:05 a.m.

A source said emergency personnel were “working feverishly” at the scene to free a victim from the vehicle.

The Upper Providence Police Department refused to confirm the number of cars involved or the number of people injured in the crash.

Police said an investigation is pending, but no officer would comment on any details of the crash, and the department declined to release any information. It’s possible that a report on the crash won’t be ready until early next week, according to police.

In addition to Upper Providence Police, personnel from Oaks Fire Company, Mont Clare Fire Company, Collegeville Fire Company and Trappe EMS were on scene. Workers from PECO and Verizon were also alerted due to the downed utility pole, according to Hughes.
