Borough Redistricting Committee Mulls Changes

The body held its second meeting on August 2.

made some preliminary alterations to the four wards at its August 2 meeting, The Mercury is reporting.

The committee, comprised of citizens and borough officials from each ward, is charged with the task of balancing the population in the wards; which effectively means siphoning over 1,000 residents from the North Ward and redistributing them to the Middle, East, and West—leaving each with as close to 4,100 as possible.

At the body’s most recent meeting, they bandied about a few ideas for redrawing the borough. Their stated objective is to do so as conservatively as possible, with an eye on keeping common areas together. Here’s, at the moment, what they’re thinking:

  • Mowere Road was proposed as the dividing line between the North and West wards.
  • An L-shaped region that stretches from west of Starr Street and south down to 5th Avenue would be moved from the East to the Middle Ward.
  • A chunk of the West Ward, east of Bridge Street, would be moved into the East Ward.
