A reader opines about the gas drilling impact fee in light of recent prevailing wage reform comments.

In his r Rep. Warren Kampf claims that the best way to save money for our schools is to cut teacher pensions and exempt school construction projects from the prevailing wage. If Mr. Kampf is so concerned about having money for schools, why did he vote to pass the Marcellus Shale Impact Fee?

Other states with natural gas drilling get billions from extraction fees on the value of the gas extracted by fracking. The impact fee passed by Mr. Kampf and his Republican cronies generates a fraction of the money that all other gas producing states generate with fair extraction fees. This “Impact Fee” will generate no new revenue for our state to offset the brutal education cuts enacted by the administration and hardline majority.

Why would Mr. Kampf sell out the people he is supposed to represent? Could it be because of the millions of dollars the natural gas industry contributed to Republican candidates in 2010?

Giving away billions to the gas drilling industry while selling out our environment, our children, our teachers and the hard working people of Pennsylvania is just wrong. Mr. Kampf does not represent the values we share as a community. We should all remember that when he asks for our vote in November.
