Minimum Wage in Pa. Going Up Up Up?

Another day, another dollar.

But should Pennsylvania's working men and women be earning a few more dollars an hour?

Last month, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter signed legislation raising the minimum wage for city contract and subcontract workers to $12 an hour.

The minimum wage for everyone else in Pennsylvania is $7.25 an hour -- for now.

Legislation before the state Senate Labor and Industry would incrementally raise the state's minimum wage to $10.10 an hour by January 2016.

Senate Bill 1300, sponsored by state Sen. Tina Tartaglione (D-Philadelphia), would first raise minimum wage to $8.20 an hour on July 1; then to $9.50 an hour on Jan. 1, 2015; and finally up to $10.10 on Jan. 1, 2016.

Critics say that raising the state's minimum wage will cause businesses to cut jobs and hours. Tartaglione says that's not so.

“To the critics who say an increase in the minimum wage will hurt the economy: you are wrong,” she told WSEA. “Studies and history show that increases in the minimum have very little to no impact on the economy.”
